Doughty: Norris finalist

Drew Doughty has been selected as a finalist for the Norris Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL’s best defenseman. Chicago’s Duncan Keith and Washington’s Mike Green are the other two finalists. The winner will be announced at the NHL Awards in Las Vegas on June 23.

It’s interesting to note that none of the finalists are older than 26 and that the winner will be a first-time winner. Voting has already taken place, so we’ll just have to wait and see who takes the prize. I’ll definitely get some reaction from Doughty after today’s morning skate.

    AWESOME!!!!! Congrats Drew

  2. dtownmbrown says:

It’ll be tough to beat out Keith, but being a finalist is awesome in itself, it’s not like he won’t have multiple Norris trophies when it’s all said and done…

Just another feather in the cap for DREWWWWWWWWWWW!

  3. Paul from Oxnard says:

It’s also interesting to note that for the first time since the stone age Nick Lidstrom isn’t a finalist. :D

  4. pr0cess says:

It was intresting watching it on NHL on the FLY and how they talked about the others, it just felt like they wanted to say “But they are no Drew Doughty” lol DD is a special player and should be locked up for life in LA.

  5. DLB says:

    DREW ROCKS!

  6. Capt Jam says:

Let’s plan a road trip to Vegas!!

  7. Dayman says:

Drew is the second youngest EVER nominated

  8. Bill M. says:

    @pr0cess

Oh, I’m sure he is. Maybe the kings will let him go in UFA once he is starting to pass his prime, but you can tell they plan on riding all of his best years, and I can’t wait to watch. As somebody on here said, they may as well retire his number now. Nobody will ever wear the number 8 in LA again.

  9. KinguyJosh says:

    DREWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

  10. KingNewfie says:

Way to go Drew!! I honestly think he has it locked up too.

  11. KOHO says:

Maybe this will elevate his play even more if that’s possible.

I can’t believe the dude has always wanted to be a King!!

Give it to him, nobody his age can do what he does on “D”!

    Kid is ridiculous beyond belief.

  12. Doughty&Zeus Lover says:

    Congrats to DEWEY!!! Go Kings!

  13. Dan H. says:

Congrats Drew. You deserve everything you get in the form of Accolades. You’ve been an awesome player since you first laced them up for us!

  14. Someone says:

It will be Keith, with DD coming in second (although they don’t divulge that). Green doesn’t have the defense to be a Norris trophy winner, IMHO. Nowadays, defense does matter (unlike the Edmonton, Paul Coffey days).

  15. Capt Jam says:

My guess is that DD locked this one up with his play in the Olympics. Those 2 weeks made the east coast media stay up late to watch Kings games.

  16. Keeper says:

Man, the kid is having the time of his life! Good on ya, Drew. Have fun in Sin City!

  17. DuckHunter says:

King fans, enjoy every moment you watch this young man play because we will not see another one like him in our lifetime.

    Congrats Drew, well deserved.

  18. rocknrolltakeover says:

    Congrats Drew!

I’d say this year’s Norris nod more than makes up for getting snubbed last year in the Calder race!

  19. nykingfan says:

    Congrats Drew

In 20 years they’ll be calling the award The Doughty Trophy!

  20. c-nut says:

BIG CONGRATS to Dewey, I think he can really bring the Norris home. On to more pressing matters, tonights game. I hope our boys were watching the Ottowa/Pitt game last night and saw what playing your ass off post season style is all about! Helluva game! Ottowa battled against a much better team and came out on top in TRIPLE OT. If you had a chance to catch it, you saw an amazing effort on Ottowas part.
We need to come out tonight SHOT OUT OF A CANNON! I mean take it to them hard; control the puck, force turn-overs and lay out some physical punishment. GO KINGS GO!!!

  21. Paul from Oxnard says:

@rocknrolltakeover: It also proves that Doughty SHOULD have won the Calder last year, especially with the awful play of Mason this year.

  22. Barry's Mullet says:

Second year player at his age being nominated…says enough!

Being named as a finalist is plenty good. Congrats to Drew and Congrats the two vets, OD and Scuds for helping him on his way to greatness.

  23. oldthunder says:

Congratulations to Drew, the kid is nothing short of awesome and he is very level headed. Drew definitely needs to be locked up long term. We have had some great D men on the kings over the years but he can blow past them all.

  24. Stats1 says:

Way to go Drew! Perfect way to start the day, now let’s end it with a victory against Vancouver. GO KINGS!!!!

  25. Tim (in the OC) says:

    Outstanding!

  26. bob says:

You know what’s sad about this? Here this guy is nominated for the Norris in only his second year as a pro, yet not nominate for the Calder last year. That’s ridiculous…I guess it’s a good thing for the Olympics.

  27. jammer06 says:

Congrats Drew, if you win have a Diet Coke for me and I’ll have a beer for you

  28. Minnesota Kings Fan says:

Wow! I can’t wait to see what this kid is going to do for the Kings over the years. I always wondered about past players of Doughty’s calibre, thinking, “Why can’t the Kings ever get a player like that?” Well, they finally did!!! YES!!!

  29. VanKingsFan says:

C-Nut: Great game last night … love those double and triple OTs… would be cool if tonight game went 3 or 4 !!!.. with a Drew Doughty Winner!

OD and Scuds have been great for Doughty… its interesting that he hasnt had a mentor who is a offensive defensemen like him. It would have been great to see Scott neidermyer work with the kid. Only problem is that Doughty would end up teaching Scott more than the other way around!

  30. josh e. says:

AWESOME DEWIE! not lets get a conn smythe next :p

  31. Top Shelf says:

    Congrats to Drew.

To DL – lock him up forever this summer. I say something in the range of $90M for 15 years – gives a cap hit of only $6M/year.

  32. Matt R says:

Congrats Drew! You deserve it! Tear em apart tonight! Go Kings!

  33. Tom says:

I hope no East Coast bias comes into play,
With the voting already counted, his Olympic play might have helped him over Green but Keith played great during that also.

  34. Redstar says:

Congrats DREW!!! You have an uncanny feel for the game. We are very fortunate to have you on our team. I hope that the front office locks you up forever and you remain a King for the rest of your brillant career! GO DREW and GO KINGS!

  35. Michael J. says:

DL- Please lock this stud up for ten years the day the season ends. 10 years for $50,000,000 might do it.

  36. dtownmbrown says:

I have a vision of taking my son to a Kings game in 20 or so years and pointing up to the rafters that show 30, 16, 18, 99, 20, 8, 11, to go along with a few Stanley Cup Champion banners, and telling him about the great Drew Doughty.

  37. Dan H. says:

It looks like Alberts is back in the lineup. Lets hope our PP clicks tonight!

  38. HeyChief says:

I know most people think Duncan Keith will win it but I believe DD has the buzz going for him and will win the first of many Norris Trophys.

  39. grega11 says:

    what jammer06 said…

and let´s have fun tonight winning

    GO KINGS GO

  40. sstephen17 says:

Although I’m sure Keith will win it (better numbers on a better team), I don’t think any GM in the league would take a defenseman over Doughty. Went to about 10 games during his rookie season. Watching him play gave me hope for the future and was one of the reasons I got season tickets this year. Got his autograph at Hockeyfest and a buddy said “Hold on to that, it’s going to be worth a lot when he goes to the HoF”.

  41. Matt George says:

Don’t know who will win but Glad Drew got the Nom!

    Congrats Drew!

  42. HockeyMatt says:

Congrats to DD!! Awesome achievement. I’m looking forward to next year when Doughty and Jack Johnson are both finalists for the Norris!!

  43. Anjin says:

After being a Kings fan for almost 20 years I can honestly say the future is brighter than it’s ever been.

  44. FabKings says:

To quote Drew, ” Yeah, ya know, uh” Way to go Doughty, Good Luck! Don’t worry, you’re not being voted on your interview skills…yet. Love ya Drew

    GO KINGS GO!!!!!!

    KINGS in 6

  45. Kris says:

Can’t wait to see him walk the red carpet June 23! I gotta remember to get a new silver sharpie!

  46. Skebo says:

    Congrats Drew!!!

DL, can we see one of those 8+ year contracts for DD this off-season?

  47. brandyn says:

Jacob Muzzin named OHL’s most outstanding defencemen. wow future is bright

  48. Kings Outsider says:

I’ve been watching the NHL since 1967 and playing at a slightly lower level since 1973. Other than Orr, I have never seen a better defenseman as a 20 year old. If he stays healthy he’ll be in the discussion of best ever. You can’t put a price on that. If he goes, my season seats go too.

  49. Meg Jarrell says:

WELL DESERVED DREW! I’m thrilled the hockey media is finally watching you!! Keep kicking butt and taking names. You’re gonna win a bunch of those things!

  50. Kings Fan In Idaho says:

Whoo hoo…way to go DD! Now to make your day even better, get the winning goal tonight!

  51. mrbrett7 says:

I’ve been having some of the worst days in my life the past few days (not Kings related).

Seeing this, and knowing that this kid is a KING has made me smile for the first time in 2 days, and I LIKE to smile.

Drew, do me a favor, when you get your 100+ million over 15 years, can I borrow some? It would greatly help me.

  52. Kings Fan In Idaho says:

@ mrbrett The Kings should put a huge smile on your face tonight..look forward to it! And I hope things start looking up for ya.

  53. zdfun says:

    Can we vote?

  54. Iceguy says:

He’s the last man to wear #8 for the Kings.

  55. HBFan says:

Think about this. If JJ continues his learning curve can you guys imagine having two candidates 2012. It could happen.

  56. nykingfan says:

    Hope all is well mrbrett7

  57. thrustable says:

Yahoo Sports has Drew winning the award. That would be sweet. Congrats Drew, your name will hang in the rafters when all is said and done.

  58. Lepper says:

    Lets go Doughty!!

  59. concussionman02 says:

Congrats Drew, Man what an honor for a kid his age and what a gift for the LA fans. This is truely amazing.

To bad he is only 20. His trip to Vegas will be a lot more fun after next season.

  60. Lepper says:

What an honor it would be to bring a Norris to L.A.! I think Doughty will have his own statue outside Staples :) His game will elevate each year & his confidence will as well. His skating & shooting ability will most likely grow significantly!

  61. variable says:

    double-down on double-d…!

it seems like he has some momentum since the olympics…

i’s a dead heat between him and keith…it could go either way…

  62. Cynic says:

Keith & Green don’t stand a chance since the only vote that counts is the one Drew Doughty got.

That vote was from Juraj Mikus.

  63. dg says:

Congrats, Drew! I wish you celebrate the nomination with two goals tonight.

  64. 18,118 says:

Well deserved, DD. Now if the vote recognizes true all around defensive prowess, it’s Doughty or Keith. It’s spooky how good Drew is and looks like he will become.

Funny, it was Burkie, I think, who before the draft chattered about how he would NOT select Doughty, being as he thought Drew had already reached his development peak and “what you see of him now is all he’ll be…” Something like that.

  65. go says:

Drew is a superstar. Keith and Green can’t do what Drew does.

  66. Lepper says:

Personally, I see DD growing on the offensive end and his skating ability. Defending will always be his #1 goal, but he will be even a greater offensive threat in the future.

  67. congrats dd the norris may be yours but now is the time to kick some nuck butt and move on to the second round GO KINGSGO!
