Bernier’s thoughts

Elias Sports Bureau confirmed today that Jonathan Bernier is the youngest goalie in Kings history to record a shutout. Today, Bernier talked about his current situation. Also, check below for audio of an interview Bernier did with “Hockey Night in Canada Radio”…

Question: Have they given you any indication of what to expect here, beyond the next couple days?

BERNIER: “I just go day by day. I think the goalie that’s going to go [start] is going to get the most shots in practice, to feel the puck, but it’s good. But it’s good. I’ve played with Quickie and we get along. He’s a really good person and we get along pretty good, so it’s good that way.”

Question: What is this like for you? There has to be some pressure involved, but it has to be a lot of fun too…

BERNIER: “For sure it’s fun, but like you said, it’s a lot of pressure. I think a lot of people expect you to play at the level that you’re able to play, but it’s great. That’s what I’ve been asking for, just a chance to play, and I’m getting that chance, so it’s good that I got that good result in both games. I’ve just got to keep going in the right direction.”

Question: Is it fair to say that’s where you’ve made the most progress, in terms of being patient and waiting for that chance?

BERNIER: “I had things to learn. Right now, I can tell you that. I don’t think I could have at 19. I was so excited and wanted to play here. Every day I want to be here, but there’s things that you’ve got to go through. There’s a process that you’ve got to go through. I feel way more comfortable and confident now that I’ve played in the American Hockey League and had a good season so far down there. I feel good about my game.”

    The Kings’ future looks bright!

  2. bbb7 says:

    Interesting night for Manchester- Zatkoff was pulled after allowing 2 goals in the first 3 shots, and Matt Lopes, who had signed an amateur tryout agreement just today, came in and stopped 42 of 43 shots he faced in 54 minutes as the Monarchs came back to beat Lowell, 4-3. Talk about an auspicious – and unexpected – pro debut!

  3. Scores:

    phx 0-0 CAL/1st intermission
    JLB in goal, looking like, well, JLB…

    ana 2-0 COL/2nd intermission

    Not bad.
    Not bad!

  4. bbb7 says:

    @bbb7, hmm I see Zatkoff was injured, so Lopes has no time to get nervous, I guess :)

  5. Mike L says:

    @bbb7,

    Zatkoff was actually hurt.

  6. David says:

    @bbb7, hmm.. maybe Lopes is the Kings future… haha

  7. correction:

    ana-COL is with 12:00 to go in the second period…
    Curtis McElhinney in goal for the Ducks, looks OK…

  8. @bbb7,

    That was a great Monarchs win!
    What do they need to get into the playoffs?

  9. David says:

    @BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy,

    “Manchester’s magic number to clinch a berth in the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs is two”

  10. @BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy,

    Wow – second period in a row the Quacks score in the final minute. Now 3-1 . . .

  11. Dayman says:

    Repost
    Watching the Ana/Col game and Anderson is playing like Quick has and has just about the same record. I’m thinking Quick is worn out and tired

  12. neil says:

    @bbb7, Bernier isnt the future…..its Lopez!!!! Movie coming soon….a 25 year old local !!!!!

  13. jofa6000 says:

    just keep on doing what your doing JB, the keeper job is yours sooner or later.

  14. number 6 says:

    @jofa6000,
    Not sure, I think he’s just a phantom of your imagination. He’s ‘alright’, but the rest you’re just making up ;-)

  15. David says:

    @neil,
    who is lopez?

  16. neil says:

    @David, sorry..lopes!!!!

  17. WWAMD says:

    Right now Bernier is leading ALL goalies in the NHL in GAA and SA%. LOL!

  18. Eric says:

    By the way, if you don’t have Sirius radio, you’re missing something. Jeff Marek, who hosts HNIC Radio, is terrific. And to get 3 hours of hockey only talk every day is so cool. 1-4pm and 5-8pm. And Marek is the only east coast guy who ALWAYS talks up the Kings. And I’ve heard Rich on there a few times as well!

  19. jet says:

    @David, his middle name is Kanta

  20. luc20rules says:

    @WWAMD,
    But, if you only look at the last 2 weeks EE edges him out in both Statistics. LOL

  21. BluLiner says:

    @Dayman,
    wouldnt want to be a ‘lanche fan.

  22. luc20rules says:

    Its good to see Bernier play so well. Its even better to see the team pull together and play better Defense.
    I think Quick at his best can challenge Bernier, but right now for what ever reason he is a bit off. I would say its positioning relative to the goal not technic, but I think looking at film for a extra day or 2 will do him good.

  23. RealDrew says:

    @BluLiner,

    I’d say it’s good to be an Avs fan. The team is far exceeding expectations and their core is as young or younger than the Kings.

    This was supposed to be a rebuild year, but they are already fighting for playoffs.

  24. palffyfan says:

    Bernier IS our future. I like his confidence and he has learned it the right way and it seems he realizes that now. Love his positioning and I hope he keeps it up.

  25. Bryan Agee says:

    The Kings’ winningest goaltender of all time vs. The youngest Kings goaltender to ever record a shutout…

    We are the Kings and we’re AWESOME!

  26. Bryan Agee says:

    @Bryan Agee,

    Well, in a single NHL season, that is ;-)

  27. WWAMD says:

    @Bryan Agee,

    No….We are fans…and we’re bipolar!

  28. Kopi11 says:

    Bernier’s first game at Staples. Wanna see him in black.

  29. jet says:

    Can Bérubé play for Manchester? He is a stick man though.

  30. luc20rules says:

    I have the next 3 games circled. I want to see Bernier live post AHL experience. Wouldn’t it be great to eliminate the Ducks and clinch a playoff spot in the same game. Home and Home coming up verse the Ducks, and it could easily happen. I will be honest I was hoping they might meet the Kings in the playoffs to ease the travel schedule, but they obviously won’t be making it.

  31. Dominick says:

    @luc20rules, I said the same thing wrt the Clucks the other day.It seems as though there will be something meaningful for those games.I dream of one day meeting a fully loaded Ducks team in the playoffs,and kiling them.

  32. Goring 19 says:

    Hope the pressure doesn’t get to Bernier against the Nuks, from what I’ve seen of the kid it seems that nothing gets to him or through him HA! I said it before and I’ll say it again, Vancouver scares me. It seems like when we play them we tend to chase them, maybe tomorrow will be different though. We’re due for a killer game against them. Anybody want to predict the score? I’ll say 2-1 Kings. Any takers? Anyone?

  33. HawKings says:

    From this interview and the way JB has played, you can really see his development and how confident he is in his abilities. I know they are young and still have a lot of developing to do, but the idea of a Quick/Bernier tandem for the next 1 to 2 years (if not longer) seems real exciting as a Kings fan.

  34. Griddle says:

    NHL on the fly is reporting that lombardi’s job may be in jeopardy if the Kings lose in the first round…. Anyone know anything behind this?

  35. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    @Griddle, sounds like tripe.

  36. Nitrohockey says:

    @luc20rules, Did I miss something? I thought the Ducks were already eliminated. I was under the impression that if they lost two more games they were done, and they lost to Calgary and Vancouver. Maybe my math is bad?

  37. Nitrohockey says:

    @Goring 19, Kings find their offense and win 4-1!

  38. Nitrohockey says:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, I agree. I don’t see how if we were picked to finish 12th this year and now are ahead of schedule and in the playoff hunt that Lombardi’s job is in jeopardy. First round exit or not, we’re exceeding expectations, our GM’s job is fine.

  39. MrBrett7 says:

    @RealDrew, Soooo…who is their future franchise goaltender? Once in a generation defenseman?

    What’s that you say? They don’t have one?

  40. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    @Dayman,

    Repost
    Quick is not “tired.” He’s short on practice, and he’s getting some now.

  41. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    @WWAMD, That’s why most stats listings don’t list people who’ve played two games. It’s not statistically relevant.

  42. KingMe20 says:

    @Nitrohockey,

    If a spectacular collapse occurred, I could see Murray going, but I think Deano’s job is pretty safe.

  43. Kevin Y says:

    @bbb7,

    More goaltending controversy, huh? Might as well give him a start against Anaheim :)

  44. Quisp says:

    @Griddle,

    That’s just about the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard (this week). Maybe they think he’s still the GM in San Jose.

  45. variable says:

    @Griddle,

    i saw this…

    and it’ nothing but darren drager hypothesizing…nothing more, nothing less…

    this is what talking heads do in all sports…just like on political shows…when they need to entertain for 24 hrs or fill a hour’s worth of programming, in between highlights…

    what he said was that if the kings don’t make the playoffs or win at least one round that SPECULATION is d.l. would be replaced…

    how is that any different than before the season started…?

  46. Alternate Jersey says:

    @Nitrohockey, I think they have like one or two more games before they can be eliminated for sure, especially since they beat the Avs tonight. That would make sense then that we could be the ones to put kick ‘em out for sure.

  47. Jesse says:

    Bernie’s challenge comes tomorrow. Is this kid for real? Can’t Wait!!

    GO KINGS!!

  48. Alternate Jersey says:

    edit: the ones to kick ‘em out for sure*

  49. Alternate Jersey says:

    @Goring 19, Gonna go with 3-2 Kings.

  50. ringo says:

    @Goring 19,
    vancover has a lot of speed something we dont have much of, so we need to clog up the middle as much as possiable and sag down low if they get in to our zone. we do have some speed, we just have to play the angles and we will be fine.

    GOOOOOOOOOO KINGS!!

  51. ringo says:

    @ringo,
    oh, and by the way, kings 5 nukheads 3

  52. WWAMD says:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,

    Hence the (LOL!) at the end of the sentence!

  53. KC23 says:

    @Griddle, That is such a load of crap.

  54. Shakes says:

    @luc20rules, that’s too funny

  55. nykingfan says:

    @variable,

    I’ve seen his name a few times on here…who is this turdhead Drager and why is he even relevant? Everytime a trade rumor has come up and his name is attached to it, it never happens.

    This might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
    Are you sure he didn’t mean Executive of the Year award?

    I have a thought..how about this turd’s name be permanently banned from this site?

  56. Simarosa says:

    Took the trainer and 2 other players to get Zatkoff off the ice last night. Zatkoff will see Dr. Vailas today for an evaluation. Lopes certainly is an unknown, he’s never played a single minute in an ECHL game, let alone the AHL. Lopes did play fantastic last night and the M’s got the 2 points. Can only imagine who the Monarchs will sign now, high school hockey is over. I’m a Kings/Monarchs fan and I know it’s all about the Kings, but……Bernier can’t come back to Manchester soon enough for me.

  57. Kevin from Toronto says:

    @neil,
    I hope you’re joking. Bernier (Another Candian) is the Future of the Kings

  58. griddle says:

    @Griddle, Yeah, I kind of thought it odd….I’ll take it with a grain of salt as Drager’s Delusional…

  59. oldthunder says:

    Man JB put in a lot of “goods” into that quick interview.

    JB = Johnny ‘b’ Good

  60. nykingfan says:

    @Simarosa,

    How bad did the injury look?

    I got the impression from TM’s comments that Bernier will be going back at some point after tonights game. I can’t see him letting Bernier stay up here and sit on the bench while Quick is playing every game.

  61. Simarosa says:

    How bad did the injury look?

    A Lowell player crashed the net after scoring the 2nd goal and the left side of Zatkoff appeared to take the brunt of the “crash”. Zatkoff was laying in the crease, face down for a while and didn’t move. Not only did he need 3 people help him get off the ice, he couldn’t get up on his own either. He wasn’t putting much weight at all on his left leg as he left the ice.

    Here’s hoping that Bernier takes the red eye back to NH after he gets the win tonight.

  62. mrbrett7 says:

    @Griddle, Thanks…I woke up sick about to leave on a small vacation, so I was in a terrible mood…I needed the chuckle.

  63. mrbrett7 says:

    @Simarosa, Yikes!

  64. Darrell says:

    @Nitrohockey, Your math is bad. Their chances are bleak to be sure, but they could still make it. They may even pass us – though they would have to win out and we would have to lose out. Since we play them twice, that scenario could actually happen. OTOH, if they lose one more game (or we win one) then they can’t catch us. The Blues and Flames are still able to knock us out, too. We need to win some games.

  65. Darrell says:

    ..There’s also a super-rare (though very intriguing) chance that we could finish 7th and the Ducks finish 8th – all the California teams could make it this year!

  66. neil says:

    @Kopi11, actually Bernier played at Staples a few years back….

  67. nykingfan says:

    @Simarosa,

    Thanks man

    that sucks!

  68. shades says:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, and he’s TIRED…
    physically and mentally!

  69. neil says:

    @Griddle, no more realiable then if someone said that on this blog….

  70. Paul from Oxnard says:

    Jim Fox will be a guest on NHL Live on XM Radio channel 204 and the NHL Network on TV this morning. The show starts at 9am Pacific.

  71. nykingfan says:

    @number 6,

    LOL

  72. RJC76 says:

    @nykingfan,

    Unfortunately us Canadians have to listen to him on TSN.

  73. nykingfan says:

    @Paul from Oxnard,
    Since I’m stuck here in hell (work)
    A little synopsis would be cool..if possible

    thanks

  74. Paul from Oxnard says:

    @nykingfan, I’ll try…

  75. Bob Bobson says:

    Tonight’s game with Bernier starting will be interesting. I totally buy into Dean’s philosophy that playing with expectations is harder than playing without them. Bernier, coming in as an emergency recall, did not have expectations. Now he has a shutout and played stellar in his only two NHL starts this season so everyone expects him to play at that same level because we need (or at least would really REALLY like) to have win.

  76. Running Man says:

    @Nitrohockey,

    Maybe because of trade of Halpern and Modine?

    LoL

  77. Running Man says:

    Big Game Tonight for the Kings. Another playoff team that the Kings have had no success against. Beat this team and they are right on track heading into the playoffs.

  78. neil says:

    breaking news according to NHL.com..After a night bof heavy drinking the Kings have WAIVED J. Quick.Quick was found passed out at a club in Manhatten BEACH EARLY THIS MORNING…………

    april fools!!! Go Kings

  79. neil says:

    Calgary might make the playoffs…….instead of the Avs…

  80. Sebastian says:

    I’d like to get Ersberg’s thoughts on all of this. He went from being #1 last season, to #2 this season with barely any games, then down to #3 in the same season. I hope he doesnt lose his mind and go postal.

  81. BluLiner says:

    @RealDrew,

    . . . and serious risk of missing playoffs. Fighting for the playoffs will not be a consolation, if they actually miss the playoffs after sitting in such a good position all year long.

  82. Paul from Oxnard says:

    Speaking of the NHL Network, if anyone (nykingfan) lives outside the local market for the Kings, tonight’s game will be on the NHL Network. So don’t look for it on CI if you have that.

  83. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    @Running Man,

    That would be stupid. You’re gonna get all over him for giving up a late pick and a “conditional” pick (when the condition is winning the cup?)

  84. @David,

    Is Zatkoff okay?

  85. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    @shades, The point of “he’s not ‘tired’” is that he’s not tired. Ask anyone around the team. He’s not tired. Stop pulling this stuff out of your ass.

  86. Jason says:

    Ok so what if bernier plays amazing and wins again or even gets another shutout? Does he play again Saturday lol? Yes Quick is our Goalie and has play decent all season but he has been inconsistent. Sometimes I wonder if KIngs picked the wrong Goalie to build themselves on… Bernier will be a # 1 goalie somewhere and I really hope kings dont screw this up

  87. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    Relax! He’ll probably be #1 HERE next season.

  88. Paul from Oxnard says:

    @nykingfan, So here’s what Foxy had to say…

    Q: Which Jonathon starts if the playoffs start tomorrow?

    A: Quick. Period. He’s the #1 goalie. You’d lose his trust if you didn’t go back to him.

    Q: What’s Quick’s mental status considering that Bernier starts tonight?

    A: The communication is still there. Quick was great all year, but has been a little off since the Olympic break. Hopefully the rest will solve his problems.

    Q: Who is the best matchup in the 1st round?

    A: Edmonton. lol. Seriously, if the Kings could get up to 5th then they’d get Phoenix which is probably the best matchup. If not Phoenix, then it would be San Jose.

    Q: Who are the unsung heroes on the Kings?

    A: Handzus because of his versatility. Richardson because of his energy. Simmonds because he’s trustworthy and doesn’t have an off night.

    Q: Simmonds is +22???

    A: Because he’s so good at both ends of the ice.

    Q: Still surprised by Doughty?

    A: Yes, still surprised to see how good he is most nights. He’s at at the top of the NHL right now. His spin move when pressured is unstoppable. The head fake gets him out of trouble. Plays like he’s much older.

    Q: How are the fans?

    A: Fans have waited 7 years. But they’re being fickle right now because the Kings have slid a bit.

    Q: Can Colorado make it or will it be Calgary?

    A: The schedule favors Colorado, but experience favors Calgary. Everyone always expects Colorado to fall out because they weren’t supposed to be here.

    Q: How does he keep his hair so nice?

    A: I follow Bill Clement’s advice (Clement was one of the interviewers).

  89. Quisp says:

    @nykingfan,

    Yeah, funny, about a year ago he published some idiotic rumor and I picked it apart sentence by sentence. I had no idea the guy was some kind of national treasure; I got several thousand irate darren dreger supporters “educating” me on the subject of my own worthlessness.

  90. shades says:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Relax! If he continues to play well, he will be #1 for the rest of this season…do you have a problem with the Kings winning with Bernier in net?…or is Quick a relative of yours?

  91. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    It has nothing to do with Quick. It has to do with reality. Reality is Bernier is not going to finish the season with the Kings. It can’t be any simpler. Insistence that it’s any different is just going to cause more bitching and moaning when it doesn’t happen.

  92. Carol Vadnais says:

    Kenneth,

    wake up to reality. if Hasek can be replaced after two games into round one, than so to can quick.

    Bernier keeps putting up shutouts or one goal wins, and he is here to stay.

  93. holly says:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,
    People have a hard time with the reality that Manchester does exist and is taken into consideration with decisions. If they were out of the play offs right now, it’d be a different animal. But they’re pretty much guaranteed a slot right now and they’ve got a goaltending roster that consists of this season’s back up who is injured and a guy who made his pro-debut last night and has 18 games of college under his belt. As much as people want to see it, LA won’t throw Manch under the bus IF it is avoidable, which right now it seems to be.

  94. holly says:

    @Carol Vadnais,
    Won’t happen.

  95. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    @Carol Vadnais, stop playing GM.

  96. Simarosa says:

    According to reports, Lopes will be released tomorrow and the M’s will sign 2 goalies. The local beer league guy is a tax accountant, so it would seem that he’s kind of busy in April.

    Unfortunately, Zatkoff is out week to week.

  97. holly says:

    @Simarosa,
    This season has really been a test of character for the Manch guys.

  98. erwin says:

    @Griddle, Lombardi job is safe,before he sign a contract with the Kings he made a point to the owners that rebuilding will take time and there’s no quick fix. I don’t like when he signed players who end up doing nothing the likes of Bure,the guy from sharks and many more older players. Why not sign like players that can skate and chip in 15-20 goals a year.

  99. erwin says:

    @Jesse, Bernier is for real and kings fans stop sayiyng I have to wait and see if he can play in the NHL. The Bernier you saw two years ago is not the same we see now, his positioning around the crease is awesome . he will be the next roy

  100. Simarosa says:

    @holly -

    Just listening to Bags talking to Greg and the Morning Buzz this am was exciting. The guys were so happy with the way the game went last night.

  101. Dominick says:

    @shades, You seem to have a problem with the Kings winning with Quick in the net,and this is still the same team that will play for Bernier.Is Bernier your little brother?

  102. Carol Vadnais says:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,

    It’s called having an informed opinion, based on trends and prior facts (Ozzie replacing Hasek, Ward coming on strong, Hedburg, etc).
