Quick’s big day

Jonathan Quick was back at practice today, looking surprisingly alert for someone who couldn’t have had much sleep over the previous two days. Early Thursday morning, Quick learned that his wife, Jaclyn, had gone into labor. Just more than 24 hours later, at 4:15 a.m. Friday, the couple’s daughter, Madison Mychal Quick, was born. Quick will be back in goal tomorrow against Nashville, Terry Murray said, and today Quick shared his fatherhood story with reporters…

Question: Have you been able to get any sleep in the last couple days?

QUICK: “Well, considering the situation, I think I did a good job of taking advantage of my opportunities to sleep. Last night, I did get a good sleep last night. The night before was a little bit of a different story. But you expect it. As far as having to go through all that stuff, that’s not the first thing on your mind at all. You’re there to support your wife and do what you can for her.”

Question: Did you get the call right when you got to hotel in Dallas (early Thursday morning)?

QUICK: “I got the call, not right when I got to the hotel (but soon after). I was aware of her going to the hospital. We had a situation, a couple of days prior to that, where it was a false labor sort of thing, so they just monitored her for a couple hours and sent her home. So I didn’t know if it was going to be a similar situation to that. But once I got the word that the baby was going to be coming, I booked a flight.”

Question: Kind of a long flight back to L.A.?

QUICK: “Well, I was going to have to make that trip anyways. Just a little earlier than I expected.”

Question: How long was the labor?

QUICK: “It was long. Really long. [laughs] I wasn’t there for the first 13 hours of it. It was about 36 hours or so. By the time I got there, she already wanted (the baby) out. But it was good that she had something to look forward to, going into it, like me coming home. They knew at the time that it was going really slowly, so they knew it was going to be a long one. I’m just glad I was able to make it back for it.”

Question: Have you ever felt more useless, when you’re in the delivery room?

QUICK: “No, never. You try to give her support, and you don’t want to say the wrong thing. You’re just trying to give support and say the right things. You want to give her some feeling of relief, but no matter what you say, it doesn’t make a difference. [smiles] It’s still not a fun process. But it’s exciting. We’re both very excited and very happy. … I’m trying to hold her hand, and she’s squeezing my hand and I think she broke my finger. You try to say stuff. You tell her she looks beautiful and she looks at you like…after 36 hours of labor, it’s not what she wants to hear. She knows what’s up. [laughs] She knows you’re just feeding her (B.S). But it was an exciting time, and we’re both very happy.”

Question: Are you ready to jump back into game action now?

QUICK: “Yeah. Obviously that’s your priority. Your family is your first priority always, but she supports what I do, obviously, and she supports me playing. We’re fortunate enough that she’s not in a situation where she does need me every minute of every day, directly after having the baby. So you don’t like the feeling of not being with your team. You’re checking your cell phone, checking on the scores and everything. I want to be here and I want to play, so I’m looking forward to it.”

    Rich,

Your “have you ever felt more useless” question makes me think you have kids. But for some reason I thought you didn’t. Which me is right?

  14. jet says:

Don’t worry the next one is only a few hours of labor, the third is less than an hour, the next 4 are having the doctor tell you “tell her not to push at all on the contractions, we are not ready”.
BTW gentlemen, do not ever do this, or you will get the ‘the look’. Learned this one the hard way.
