What are the “conditions” for the conditional seventh-round pick involved in the Kings-Columbus trade for Fredrik Modin? In my post-deadline conversation with him, Dean Lombardi had mentioned it being tied to the number of games Modin played, but it appears that Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch has found the answer. In a blog post, Reed reports that Columbus will only get the seventh-round pick if the Kings win the Stanley Cup this season.

I’ve never wanted to lose a draft pick more!
Clearly Modin is the missing piece, and clearly DL knew it!!!?
Wow
Greatest trade in the history of this organization.
Gretzky is a close second though. ;)
@hagi18,
Top Kings trades of all time.
1. Modin for free
2. Gretzky
In which case, the pick would be the last in the draft, making it Mr. Irrelevant. Great trade!
That is very hard to believe
rich is it confirmed ?
Wow
Why are people saying the trade was free???!?!?!
We’re winning the Cup this year dammit! Take the 7th rounder you fools!
That is unbelievably awesome. Hammer, can you high-five Dean for us?
That seems cruel. I mean, it’s just a (hopefully very late round) 7th. Just give them the pick regardless.
Looks like were gonna out a 7th round draft pick come summer time.
Remember we got Sean O’Donnell from the Ducks for free too. The condition was that if we trade him before the deadline, we would have to give the Ducks one of our picks (a 2nd rounder I think). We kept him and that was that.
I know. Total bummer man. Sucks. ;)
Lombardi definitely has pulled some good trades. The return on Tukonen, POS, Purcell and more have really positioned the Kings nicely for the playoffs and beyond..
So the Kings get a Cup, and they get some ice for their cooler and a bag of hockey pucks. i like it.
I think Tampa was working the salary dump angle on this one. If Modin were sent to the minors and was claimed off waivers Tampa would still be responsible for half his salary. By trading Modin away, Tampa is no longer responsible for any of his salary. Tough way to shed some salary IMO
since when does “significant playoff succes” mean the same as “winning the Stanley Cup”?
seems to be reading more into it than is meant…
report from Columbus writer…
Modin Conditions Learned
LOS ANGELES: The Blue Jackets will not receive the conditional seventh-round pick the got for Fredrik Modin unless the Los Angeles Kings win the Stanley Cup, the Dispatch has learned.
Jackets general manager Scott Howson, contacted at the general managers meeting, would say only the condition was based on “significant playoff success.”
Modin was traded to Los Angeles last week at the trade deadline. Regardless of whether they get the pick, the transaction saves the franchise money for the rest of the season.

@Joe Dirt,
*edit Columbus
if that is not “WIN-WIN” then I don’t know what is
Some of the comments on that blog are remind me o years past… Good stuff DL
also from the same Columbus blog…
“Modin was dealt to Los Angeles for a conditional seventh-round pick last Wednesday. The condition is based on how the Kings perform from now until season’s end. The details of those conditions are not known.”
get that? details of the conditional pick are not known….it is pure speculation that the Kings would have to win the Whole Enchilada for CBJ to get the 7th pick…
@Real7, When he said, “the dispatch has learned” it implies they found out more than just what the GM said…
anyway, it’s a Great Deal for us….GO MO !!!
btw Rick Nash is reportedly not going to play against the Ducks tonight….[I think it's tonight]
Modin may also have made it clear that there was absolutely no chance of his staying in Columbus.
@Real7, I see what you are saying Real, but the dispatch is reporting otherwise. That part is very clear. Although they don’t say what their source is.
@Real7, And for what it’s worth, Niemi starts in place of Huet tomorrow night.
Well, I for one hope the BJ’s get that 7th round pick!
@fiveholio,
except in hockey, those guys sometimes make a difference
I’ll take a good BJ for a 7th rounder any day of the week. Wait. That didn’t come out right.
Something tells me that the true condition will be made clear by Columbus after a day or two…
Nothing like the word ‘free’ to set the trade winner in the wrong direction, without clarification.
Now the entire world lists the Kings as the winner of the trade…
i would give them a 1st rounder if he helps us win a cup
@Joe Dirt, Columbus would be responsible for half Modin’s salary if the Kings hypothetically claimed him off re-entry waivers.
Meaning, if Modin cleared waivers and then Columbus tried to call him back to the big club, and then the Kings made a claim for him, ala Randy Jones.
Remember, Modin had only 2 goals and 3 assists in 25 games with Columbus before the trade with a $3.25 million salary with a slew of injury problems earlier in the season. DL gambled and so far its paid off.
@Milton Waddams, don’t forget smyth
@VanKingsFan,
But mostly only for Detroit
who needs Kovi, when we got someone for free..? Free any day of the week..
I don’t think it’s NUMBER of playoff games.. You could take between 16 and 28 games and still win (or lose) the Cup.. What did DL say? “That’s why you have guys like Solly, to work out those conditions.”
@fiveholio, If the Kings win the Cup this season, everything else in the world will be Mr. Irrelevant.
@wavesinair,just a 7th rounder and a BJ for everyone.
@Milton Waddams, We did not pay too much for OD either.
Ziggy was #3.
DL was a joke just a couple of days ago for making that trade.Does this mean that the jokes on some Kings fans.
Any more “conditional” draft picks we can give up for that Cup?!?! I’m game! Show me all in!
@Sebastian, Oh crap, if we lose that 7th round choice it might mean we won’t get what we need to win the Standly Cup! …. errr wait, never mind.
It’ll be the first sports paraid I would even remotedly consider attending.
:D
@PRMan, Yup.
@Blurker, You mean, “Obviously…”
@Dominick,
I miss Ziggy =(
@djspock92, it wasnt much of a gamble imo. We had extra cap space and if things didnt work out then we could just sit him.
Obviously.
Here’s hoping that LA has to pay up! I’d love to lose that draft pick!!
Hahahah, highway robbery at it’s finest.
@Blurker,
The scary thing is DL still bargained it down to a 7th Round Pick.
@Milton Waddams,
What do you mean for free. Once post season starts we got a shot!
@Dominick,
Yes, in particular I recall that one dimwit called DL “the most overrated GM in the league.” I hope he’ll be man enough to step up when the Kings actually have to part with that 7th Rounder for Modin. ;-)
Seriously, Modin has already justified the trade of a low pick for him, just in what he’s done since he came over. He’s contributed beyond what anyone could reasonably have expected, and he’s shown that he’s hardly the broken-down, washed-up wimp that some folks in Columbus thought they were giving up.
What impresses me is that he has scored both of his goals without having to tap into what is supposedly the one weapon he has left, his booming slapshot. Both of his goals have come on the backhand, which means that he’s going to the net and using his size where it does the most damage. That should make him a good complement for Fro’s puck-possession skills.
Rich: The Kings confirmed the Columbus Dispatch report last night after the game…I asked. :-)
i know i was talking with someone on here about how Modin should play and he was saying that Ivananas would be better for the team well i won’t go and rub in their face but really he is better than the Jones deal if the kings don’t get the cup all the kings do is pay the contract.. really 2 goals 1 assist and we don’t give up anything and if we do it has to be a 7th I’m sorry but what a great trade Halpern will come around but Purcell(who sucks) and a 3rd round for him is more than a 7th and we probably won’t even get to the finals let alone win it so great trade i love it more experience and great game last night GO KINGS!!!
@Chuck,
7th round for Modin is a steal right there but i agree please get the cup the blue jackets can have the pick!!
@Gann Matsuda,
Excellent.
That’s for posting this, Gann.
@ducksuck,
Seriously?? Anyone that thick-headed is just asking to be called out. Man.
Even though he’s getting old and banged-up, Modin has more skill and talent in one hand than Ivanans has in his entire hulking body.
@DougS,
Or rather, Thanks for posting this.
@Milton Waddams,
What about Vachon? And Felix the Cat?
Seventh-round pick for the opportunity to sing the Swedish Chef song for Boom Boom again – done.
@Matt R,
Remember a certain Mr. Robitaille? :)
