Doughty on `Hockey Night’

After the Kings-Montreal game on Saturday, Drew Doughty was the guest on Hockey Night in Canada’s “After Hours” show. Click below to check out the video. Particularly humorous was Doughty’s story of how he first met Wayne Gretzky. Incidentally, I first met Vin Scully the same way.

    Funny, that’s how I met McSorley. Didn’t want to shake his hand after.

  5. Todd M. says:

    how awesome is it to see that hockey card of him as a 4yr old listing the KINGS as his favorite team…

  6. jammer06 says:

    wonder where that mite card is now?

  7. Matt R says:

    Great stuff, enjoyed that! I must be hanging out in the wrong bathrooms…

  8. Lepper says:

    Dewey!!!! You better win!

  9. Real7 says:

    great interview!
    how DD met Gretzky….hilarious…

  10. Ziggy Stardust says:

    That’s actually the same way I met Bob Miller at the old Ice-O-Plex during the 1999 training camp (Ziggy’s first camp with the Kings).

    I recall asking Bob who was out there wearing #14 (as Norstrom was not present due to a holdout at the time). Turns out, Modry was wearing Norstrom’s sweater.

    I made sure not to shake Bob’s hand.

  11. Jayrew says:

    I pissed next to Al Michaels once at a kings game. It was a miracle

  12. Jammers says:

    I tried to count how many times DD said “you know” in the interview, but I lost count somewhere around 3,000.

    Great player, great guy, and we are lucky to have him here in LA. Hopefully he is here for a really long time.

  13. Harry says:

    @Jammers,

    Actually, we HOPE he ends his career here, in LA!

  14. Hazen says:

    @Matt R, Umm..Never mind. :)

  15. David says:

    @Jammers,
    obviously nothing happened there, you know?

  16. Howe 9 says:

    Big mistake when the announcer asked about what he learned from Blake. It was nice Doughty didn’t correct the announcer’s mistake & embarrass him & just talked about O’Donnell.

    Makes you wonder what it would have been like if it was Blake & not OD teaching Doughty his first season.

  17. YogaPhart says:

    @Howe 9,

    The odd thing is that JJ was the one who lived under the same roof with Blake for a while, but yet DD is the one who inherited the awesome hipcheck.

  18. Jammers says:

    Why didn’t they ask the question that all Kings fans have on their mind: When is DD going to hook up with Heidi? That was cute how they went “house hunting” together for his player spotlight.

    Actually, maybe JMFJ is better for Heidi since they are both from Michigan.

  19. Schoeny says:

    That halloween picture is hilarious. Brownie is always so solemn and serious in interviews.. didnt know he had a lighter side. What’s Simmer wearing??

  20. Meg Jarrell says:

    @Schoeny, Simmer was Erkel. That is one of my favorite Brownie moments EVER!

  21. Capt Jam says:

    The thought of meeting another man in the loo has never occurred to me. You guys are special. LOL.

  22. Sparman says:

    Oh, they’re describing Drew’s play….

    wait for it…..

    wait for it….

    here it comes……

    “….only 20 years of age yet so poised and composed out there….”

    There it is. It wouldn’t be a piece on Drew without that phrase.

  23. Lady says:

    No practice today?

  24. Dominick says:

    I was watching NHL network before the game last night and Denis Potvin(I think) had all kinds of man-love for the Kings.Especially DD.I think it’s safe to say everyone loves DD these days.

    Awesome interview…really fun to watch.

    Best Part: “I wanna play for the kings as long as possible”

    ….ya know?!

  29. DougS says:

    @kingsxstevenxkings,
    To which we say: “Right back at ya, kid!”

  30. kingsxstevenxkings says:

    @DougS,

    I’d be perfectly happy if 100% of my ticket revenue went to DD..he can have sections 108 208 and 308 all season if that’s what it takes haha

  36. Marko says:

    Dean Lombardi is on record that the pre-draft interviews with Doughty were a huge factor in deciding to draft him, his character, etc. Sure comes through on this interview also

  37. @KC23,

    Agree. There were only two problems for me…

    1): Kings had just lost to the Habs, 4-2; must have nagged at DD while he spoke. Of course, all the folks on the show loved it that the Canadians won…
    2): Half of it was about DD at the Olympics, and how wonderful it was for him to be winning the Gold medal. Of course, all the folks on the show loved it that the Canadians won… Again!

    I’m sure the Kings’ Canadian fans really loved the interview. For me… Meh. It was okay. DD is a great young celebrity, beyond just a hockey star. But I hated the circumstances surrounding the interview…

    I’m biased.

  38. Dominick says:

    I agree with Bako.lol

  39. tornado12 says:

    that was awsome…thx so much Rich

  42. Carol Vadnais says:

    I’ve got such a man-crush on him. What a great guy. Gonna be fun to watch him in purple and black for the next 20 years.

    THINK ABOUT IT: He’s won gold in juniors and the olympics and he’s headed for a Norris trophy and he’s only 20! And he’s so grounded!

  43. jet says:

    Some folks are just made to wear the crown.

  44. Mark says:

    Great interview. I love this guy and his easy going attitude is great to see. Talent wise he’s way older than his actual years suggest. I’m just glad he’s a King and not playing for anyone else.

  45. Tyfighter77 says:

    It would be really cool to see what each players favorite team was growing up. I wonder how many were Kings fans.

  46. Alex says:

    (Kevin Weekes)Wasn’t this the asshole that said the KINGS wouldn’t make it to the playoffs this year at the beginning of the year?..Now he’s sucking L.A.KINGS BALLS?..Go KINGS!!

  47. Dominick says:

    @Alex, Actually Weekes has been a big time supporter of the Kings all season long.Especially supportive of Quick right around November.Being a goalie himself I trust his perspective on Quick.He might have started the season that way but so did alot of people.Just look at the posts from Kingsfans during our first 4 game losing streak,and every losing streak there after.

  48. KingFan4ever says:

    Stamkos already has 41 goals but Doughnuts gets all the hockey love! Awesome.

    On a different note, the hapless Blue Jackets that got a merciless beatdown last night just beat the Mighty Ducks 5-2. Thank you Columbus for laying down last night and for putting the first nail in the Mighty Ducks’ playoff coffin.

  49. luc20rules says:

    @Dominick,
    Yes, it just garbage compared to the possible future intervue of Dewey talking about his great play in winning a huge silver cup for the Kings.

  50. luc20rules says:

    @Dominick,
    I remember John Buccigross had the Kings as the 8th seed just before hosting HockeyFest and during then a day later he was on a show and said he down graded them to 10th(slimy Kiss###). To show what he knows his pre-season pick was the Anahiem Sucks to win it all. DL next year lets get a host that knows hockey.

  51. Dominick says:

    @luc20rules, Yea I remember thinking the Gucks might do it.Then the season started.lol

    I wish I could have those 2 seconds back.

  52. Steve S. says:

    What a delightful kid. Polite. Friendly. Just off color enough to be funny (“kind of sucks for Sid”…”Bunch of French people…so I got off the elevator…I was embarassed”).

    Great kid.

  53. tuan jim says:

    @Alex,

    I saw that NHL on the Fly show. Larry Murphy sorta kinda predicted the Kings would make the playoffs, but Weekes said uh-uh, next year in Jerusalem.

  54. Dustin says:

    Haha, that’s the same way I met Tim Gleason when he was a rookie. He was doing a signing with Dustin Brown at Valencia mall and he stepped up to the urinal next to me.

  55. tuan jim says:

    @KingFan4ever,

    Stamkos is a comet-and-a-half! He was an easy first choice.

    It took real perspicacity to pick Dewey second in the 2008 draft crop.

  56. KC23 says:

    @Alex, Don’t know if he what he thought about the Kings personally, but didn’t just about everyone outside of King’s homerland think the same thing?

    I think the best I heard at the beginning of the season from any hockey press was “they have a chance” to make the playoffs or “they are much improved”.

    No hockey experts would of put them in the top 10 in the league thats for sure.

  57. KC23 says:

    Boy, him and Simmonds living the dream. I hope to one day see them handing off the Cup while skating around the Staple Center Ice with the Cup raised over their heads.

  58. KC23 says:

    OT:

    I think the playoff picture for the Kings is actually taking shape already. Here is how I see the Kings road to the cup.

    First round: Kings Vs Yots.
    Second Round: Kings Vs Sharks/Hawks
    Semi-Finals: Kings Vs Sharks/Hawks/Canucks

    Kings have a 50/50 shot in the first round.
    Kings have an outside shot in the 2nd round.
    Kings have an outside shot against against Sharks/Hawks, but would almost certainly lose to the Canucks.

  59. Player-X says:

    @tuan jim,
    ding, ding. PERSPICACITY. 25 points and a free ticket to the vocab worklab.

  60. Steve S. says:

    @KingFan4ever, A guy who scores a lot on a bad team is not necessarily a great player…

  61. jammer06 says:

    Anyone else notice the fact that DD comes off as pretty frugaL? Doesn’t want to pay for plane trips, wants to stay in the shadows a little, cuts his own vegetables (surprised he doesn’t buy them precut, I would). Maybe we all need to kick in for a personal trainer for him so he doesn’t balloon up on us.

  62. Sparman says:

    @Harry,

    Great aricle indeed. It’s hard to believe that the Register actually had an original article about the Kings rather than something from the AP Wire.

    I thought this paragraph was classic:

    “None of this surprises the Kings, based on last season, when they opened the rookie package and saw that no assembly was required.”

  63. KingFan4ever says:

    @Steve S.,

    My point exactly. Stamkos is a great young player but I think the reason Doughty is getting the love is the impact he has made on the team that drafted him. Hindsight is 20/20 and in this case, I am so happy the Kings drafted out of need which was defense. We are seeing the dividends.

  64. Mik says:

    What’s the over under on how many Norris trophies this kid will win?

  65. Choralone says:

    Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but I thought the interviwer on the left gave a little dig at JJ’s choice to go the opening ceremony. When Drew mentioned he preferred to stay home and get a good night’s sleep, the interviewer says something to the effect of “It turns out it was the right choice” – like Jack going or Drew not going had some sort of effect on the outcome of the Gold Medal game…

  66. Minnesota Kings Fan says:

    I can’t even count the numerous times I’ve seen interviews with players that were like this one where I thought, “Why can’t the Kings ever get a guy like that?” Well, they finally do! At last! I believe there is a Cup coming sometime in the next few years. Can’t believe I said that out loud! Can’t wait to see them on the 29th out here. Missed them on New Year’s Eve… It’ll be my 5 year-old’s first hockey game. GO KINGS!
