Bob Miller update

Bob Miller is recovering from the virus commonly known as shingles and will not be a part of the broadcasts for the Kings’ next two games, tomorrow night at Staples Center and Wednesday at Chicago (FSN is not televising Friday’s game at Dallas). Television duties will be handled by Nick Nickson and Jim Fox, while Mike Kalinowski (the Kings’ manager for communications and public relations) and Daryl Evans will work the radio side. You might remember the Kalinowski-Evans tandem from a couple years ago, when Nick missed some games with a bad back.

It certainly was an interesting one last night. Obviously I didn’t get to see the broadcast, but Jim and Daryl deserve credit for stepping into unfamiliar roles and getting the job done. The biggest credit probably goes to Nick, for carrying me through an entire broadcast! It was a lot of fun, and it’s difficult to overstate how much work all of those guys put into making a broadcast work well. Continued best wishes to Bob for a speedy recovery.

    Get well soon, Bob!!

    Damn chicken pox!!! (cause of shingles)

    Very happy Nick is doing the TV broadcast. Well deserved. He is an excellent PBP guy. Kalinowski also did training camp games at toyota sports center if I’m not mistaken.

    Too bad you got squeezed out Rich. I thought you did a really good job considering the circumstances. I think an internet radio pre-pre game show, or late night show is in your future. Do it!

  3. number 6 says:

    Rich, you did Such an excellent job. Voice strong and clear, comments precise and always appropriate. Well done.

  4. TeamHasHoles says:

    Herpes Zoster… Very painful… I was lucky to have only a mild case and it still felt like a bad sunburn for 6 weeks. I hope he feels better soon, I know what he’s going through!

  5. Mel Powell says:

    Aw, nuts…I also had that a couple of months ago. Worse than the shingles were the people teasing me for having a roof-repair disease…

    Meanwhile, Rich, you know we all love you but the Kings are 0-1 with you in the booth. Out. Now. Even if they didn’t already have backup plan. :-)

  6. JonG says:

    Get well soon Bob! It’s not Kings hockey without you.

  7. Julie says:

    Yikes! I haven’t had them myself but I’ve heard shingles can be painful, sorry Bob! Get well soon!

  8. wavesinair says:

    @TeamHasHoles, Yeah, people don’t realize that getting chicken pox as a kid is sometimes not the end of it. And that chicken pox is a form of herpes. Weird.

  9. baldhedjer says:

    Get well soon Bob! My dad has suffered with the shingles for months, I certainly hope that you don’t go through anything like that.

  10. BMSTANG says:

    Speedy recovery, Bob!

    Rich, heard your broadcast and thought you did an excellent job! I listen to the radio broadcasts alot. Wish we could have you back for the next two.

  11. DY says:

    First and foremost, get well soon Bob. Secondly, thank GOD Nickson is doing the PBP on the next broadcast and not Fox again. Sorry, Foxy. I love what you bring to the table, just not in a PBP role.

  12. kingsfaninri says:

    Get well soon Bob.

    I expected to see this note….

    Ken Cail recalled from Manchester (AHL) to fill in for Nick on the radio, Bob Miller on IR.

  13. Paul From Oxnard says:

    My uncle has been fighting shingles for a couple of years. Very nasty illness. Not only related to chicken pox but usually brought on by stress. I hope life as the Kings broadcaster hasn’t contributed to this with all the travel and all. I couldn’t imagine watching a Kings game without Bob Miller on a regular basis.

    Get well soon Bob!

  14. Paul From Oxnard says:

    BTW Rich, is there any way you can ensure Bob gets our well wishes? Or is there an email address we can send them to him directly?

  15. Kris says:

    Damn! I think I had that a few years ago (nurse in my family, can’t afford a doctor till, or if Obama Care). Was painful! (if that’s what it was) Get well soon Bob!!!

  16. WTF says:

    As much as I think shingles is the funniest name for a disease (I think of 50 clowns in a car) it can be serious, so here’s to Bob’s speedy return and here’s to all the broadcasters pulling together. Great to see at all levels we can step up when people are on the IR.

  17. Rich Hammond says:

    @Paul From Oxnard,
    This afternoon, I sent Bob the link to yesterday’s post with all the well wishes. I’m sure he appreciates all of them!

  18. Kris says:

    @Kris, BTW, if you wonder how someone as young as me (early 30’s) can get it, I was on meth for 10 years (off for 3 now) and had just split with my ex-wife (a Sux fan). So lowered immunity and major stress.

  19. DougS says:

    My mother had shingles once; it is painful and troublesome. Best wishes to Bob for a speedy recovery and a minimum of unpleasantness.

    Rich, don’t sell yourself short as a broadcaster! I listened to the 2nd and 3rd periods just to hear how you would do, and you were an ace. No way to tell that you had been thrown into the breach. You were smooth and confident, and you didn’t miss a step as far as I could tell.

  20. nocturn says:

    @DY, ^^^^^this^^^^^

  21. HawKings says:

    Wishing Bob a quick recovery.

  22. Scarletcat says:

    We were very concerned last night when switching from Hockey Night in Canada over to the Kings on FSW to hear Bob was out ill. Hadn’t read any updates on this or other sites during the day so it was quite a surprise. I know Bob doesn’t miss games so the concern for him was big in our house.

    Now hearing he’s dealing with shingles is only a small relief as I know this can be a very painful illness. Bob I know all the fans wish you a very fast and complete recovery.

  23. Gann Matsuda says:

    @Mel Powell, I knew this had to be your fault! :-)

  24. Winsomemore says:

    Bob, get some rest and get well!

  25. edwood2 says:

    While Bob is THE master, I look forward to seeing Nick on tv again. Any chance he will do his Michael Goulet impression? It was the best ever!

    Get well Bob!

  26. KingMe20 says:

    Rich,

    I was at the game, so I didn’t hear either the TV or the the radio broadcasts last night. However, I did listen to you on Kings Talk, and I thought it was a great show. Your insights were well presented, clear, and thorough. It was a pleasure to listen to it. This is not to say Nick and Daryl don’t do a great job, but I would like to see you get to do a chance to do that on a regular basis. Great job.

    All the best wishes to Bob. Get well soon

  27. KingMe20 says:

    @Gann Matsuda,

    Mel… Gann… I’m having flashbacks to the old Kings listserv!

    @Rich Hammond, Thanks Rich.

  29. THEROCKNROLL80S says:

    Bob, I miss hearing your voice! Again, I hope you have a fast recovery!!!

  30. Old Man says:

    Bob,I hope your not in to much pain and will return to the mic. soon. You are so loved and respected by everyone.

  31. Sebastian says:

    Best wishes to Bob, please get well soon. Kings fans need you! Although Jim and Daryl did a good job, it just was not the same watching a broadcast without our Bob Miller.

  32. King John says:

    Get well soon, Bob. We miss your voice and play-by-play. Hope to see you back soon.

  33. JPKelly says:

    I remember when former LAK color man Pete Weber filled in for a game when the Kings were in Nashville — where Weber was currently the play-by-play guy for the Preds. I don’t remember if it was Bob or Nick that couldn’t go that night. It was like, whoa! whose voice is that?! A classic case of the one-time apprentice returning the favor on an emergency basis. Very cool to think of all the guys that have worked under Bob, now doing it themselves.

    Anyway, get better soon Bob! That’s a painful virus to cope with.

    And great job to Nick, Jim, Daryl and Rich! You all never fail to serve us well!

  34. KC23 says:

    My step father just got over a nasty episode of shingles. Best wishes for a speedy recovery Bob, we’ll be praying for ya.

  35. Qmungous says:

    you did great rich, and hope bob gets well soon!

  36. Kings Fan In Idaho says:

    Bob, you have us spoiled, it just won’t be the same without you. Hurry and get well soon. We love you man.

  37. soyokaze says:

    Hope you feel better Bob! Kings games just aren’t the same without you!

  38. get well soon bob we all miss you

  39. Mike says:

    That’s too bad, Rich. You did a good job and now Kalinowski is going to Leno you out. It’s not right!

  40. Player-X says:

    @Kris,
    So what was the major stressor, meth or the sux fan for a wife?
    I blame the wife. It’s in my DNA.

  41. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    hmm…I believe shingles is herpes zostra (which I’ve had) and chicken pox (and which my parents tell me I’ve had) is herpes zoster (neither of which is an STD.)

  42. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    I was surprised how good a job Jim did with the play-by-play, but it sure did sound different! Get well Bob!

  43. PRMan says:

    Jim was terrible for about the first 5 minutes, but once the nerves went away, he really wasn’t that bad.

    It reminded me of Wayne Gretzky’s first game, where Jim looked at the camera like a deer in the headlights all night.

  44. Goring 19 says:

    Bob, get well soon! All of us Kings fans miss you dearly! I’m not too familiar with what shingles do and I don’t think I want to know but we’re all pulling for you Bob. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  45. HiStiking says:

    Well wishes to you Bob, I had shingles at 35 and only on half of my face/head…worst pain I have everfelt. It was brought on by extreme stress, in my case had just tried out for the CHP and had the panel interview so it was a very stressful week. I guess it lives inside one of the two major nerves that go up your spine, that is why I only got it on half of my face/head. Anyway, get well soon Bob, it really isn’t the same watching the games without you.

  46. KingFan4ever says:

    I’ve had the shingles and believe me it is a painful experience. It took me a solid week to recover and another few days to make sure I wasn’t contagious. It affects seniors but anyone can get it. So Mr. Miller I definitely know what you’re going through and hope you get over it soon…

  47. We miss you Bob! Get back soon! Foxy tried on Sat. and did as well as any color guy could.

  48. Buster says:

    Get well soon Bob.

    It would have been nice if we could have talked Jiggs McDonald into one of the play by play slots to bring back the old school.

  49. jtgrace says:

    @Buster,
    wonderful idea; jiggs has done a number of islanders games this year on tv/radio simulcasts, and several florida panthers telecasts; he is as good as ever, and bringing back the ORIGINAL voice of the Kings would be a great idea; he is doing an Islanders game next week at Vancouver, but hopefully Bob Miller will be back by then

  50. Gary says:

    Praying for a super fast healing for Bob Miller. A gifted play by play announcer with his finger on the pulse of the LA Kings action. We definitely miss hearing your voice. Hurry back.

  51. Gann Matsuda says:
