Hall of Fame announcer Bob Miller is ill today and isn’t expected to call tonight’s game. Jim Fox will handle play-by-play duty and Daryl Evans will move over from radio for commentary. Filling in for Daryl on the radio side, with Nick Nickson, will be, uh, me.
I’m sure you will join me in wishing Bob a speedy recovery so that he can return for Monday’s game.
alt="LA Kings Insider with Rich Hammond" />
get better soon bob…. we’ll all miss ya tonight!
Best play-by-play in the league by far. Get well soon Bob.
get well bob! and have fun on the air richie!
It’s like imagining a day at Chavez without Vin!
Come back soon, Bob!
@Lappy, agreed… and by far the best!!
Let’s hope it’s nothing serious. When was the last time Bob had to call in sick? I can’t even remember.
Bob is ABSOLUTELY the best play-by-play announcer BY FAR! And he’s been doing this for how many years? I think I recall only one other time that Bob had to call in sick!
Good luck, Rich! I know you’ll do just fine!
Get well soon, Mr. Miller.
This oughta be good….have to listen real close so we can start a Rich Hammond drinking game.
A beer for everytime “L.A. Kings Insider” is mentioned by Nick or Rich??
YOU’RE doing radio with Nick? Man i almost wish I wasn’t going to the game!
I’ve heard Jim to play-by-play once or twice when Bob is a minute late coming up from some ceromony on the ice. It was wierd :)
Feel better Bob! Good luck Rich! maybe you can take a sound clip from your broadcast and post it here. Can’t record radio…
Get well Bob, I pray for a speedy recovery. It’ll be weird watching you guys (I sit in 318 behind where you guys broadcast)and seeing no Bob. As for the radio broadcast Rich, it’ll be weird for everyone listening to hear someone say offense and not ooohfense (j/k).
Jim Fox? Oh god Bob, please get well soon!!!
seriously, best wishes for a speedy recovery!!!
I’ll watch the game on mute. My very best wishes to you Bob.
@McDonalds, Remember you can listen to the broadcast (either the TV or radio) on the radio at the game or while your standing in line for something at the concessions. I believe on the TV’s at Staples the have the radio tandem calling the game.
Get well soon Bob! You are the Wayne Getzky of play-by-play! Rich, congrats on the call up and good luck tonight!
going to miss hearing the great bob miller tonight! get well soon!
You getting your “uh’s” warmed up for tonight there Mr Hammond? ;)
Congrads Rich.
We all hope that Bob will be well and very soon, as he is the voice of the Kings.
@Lappy, This is true. Bob is our Vin Scully. He needs to get better asap!
best wishes Bob..hope to hear you soon..The game will not be the same without you
Would it be possible to clone Bob and Vin for future purposes?
When was the last time Bob Miller missed a game? I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever heard/seen a Kings broadcast game called by anyone else other than Bob. I’m sure it’s happened, but I didn’t hear it.
Hope it’s just a bad cold or something. Get well soon Bob!
Very cool on the radio color side it Rich. Don’t know what your ambitions are, but for some reason I think of you as a radio guy with your own show. I have no idea why though.
@DougS,
The only other time that Bob was out, he had back surgery I believe in the 90’s. Our prayers are for him and a speedy recovery.
Get well soon, Bob! Hopefully it’s nothing too serious.
And have fun on the radio, Rich! You’ll do great!
Oh yeah, and I guess the pre-game show starts at 6:30 then tonight?
@punkgothdoc,
Yes, as far as I know, the Bene Tleilax are working on it. They hope to that the technology required to produce viable Bob Miller and Vin Scully ghola will be ready in the relatively near future.
However, there are still problems with loss of memory and genetic dilution, so that copies will eventually run into problems, like in that Simpsons Halloween episode where Homer clones himself. Thus, Vin clones will eventually degenerate into Tim McCarver, and Bob clones will eventually degenerate into Don Cherry.
@McDonalds, Bring a little portable radio with earphones…
Chick, Vinny and Bob ruled LA. Irreplaceable.
Wow. This should be interesting.
Hope everything is ok with Bob. I can’t even imagine a Kings game being called by anyone else.
Good luck Rich. Maybe you will find your calling with this color commentary thing.
So Rich is subbing in for Daryl? Cool! I just might mute the TV and turn up the radio and see if it will simulcast!
Wow. I remember when one time bob’s mother in law passed away they had billy mac fill in. This should be interesting. I’m torn. Do I wanna hear foxy do play by play or do I wanna hear rich do color on radio?
Either way, I hope its only one game and that bob gets well soon.
Rich — maybe you can forward him the link to this post so he can see all of his fans’ get well soon comments.
@DougS, I was thinking the same thing. But that’s if I can get it to sync up. The radio feed is usually a few seconds (or more) ahead of the TV broadcast, so it’s impossible to compensate.
It would be cool though because it would be kind of like Rich doing color with Bob Miller since Bob and Nick sound so much alike! LOL.
Get well Bob!
Good luck Jim & Darryl!
And Rich….no shopping around for a full time play by play announcer job in the NHL after tonight’s game eh???
I’m surprised they didn’t ask Heidi!
GO KINGS!!!
My english teacher Come back soon, Bob!
Bob’s the only one for Kings play-by-play, but It’ll be good to have Foxie in there for consistency. Surprised they didn’t just move Nick up for the simulcast, or bring Billy MacDonald back from the OC for a game. Is this a try-out for 2050, when Bob decides to hang them up? Get well soon, Bob!
Congrats Rich! You will be amazing on the radio play-by-play, and it’s less stressful than having to look at the camera, right? Well wishes to Bob on a speedy recovery as well…just not the same without him!
@DougS, My God, if that’s the case, what would Brian Hayward degenerate into? *shudders*
@RealDrew, pretty sure he’s found his calling with the Insider, don’t you think!
yeaha…like everyone else has been saying…i hope it’s something minor and bob is back w/jim asap…
RICHARD (formerly RICH)…
are we going to have to give you a stylized handle…?
“…and with the call of the game, we send it to nick nickson and richard hammer…”
best of luck…eh, um…RICH…!
i’ll be tuning in…:)
WOW! I don’t remember the last time BOB missed a scheduled broadcast. It’ll be strange to say the least. Foxy will do a good job, but I think this is the perfect moment to
BRING OUT THE TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT!!!!!!!
Jim…you know what you must do.
GOOD LUCK TONIGHT RICH! I’m confident you’ll do well.
Bill MacDonald? No thanks!
(This needed a separate message)
GET WELL SOON BOB!
BOB
I’ve heard you call games with barely a voice left.Hard to get through a Kings game without you and Foxy doing the play by play together.Get well soon.
I’ll be switching to the radio and TV alot tonight.Good luck on calling a great game tonight Darryl and Rich.I hope Foxy and Nick are a big help on a smooth transition.
All those scenarios are so scary that I retract my idea! The Brian Hayward thought alone is gonna give me nightmares for years!
Get well Bob, I listen to you more than I ever listen to my mom.
Best of luck Rich!
get well soon bob and good luck to you rich, im sure you’ll do a good job.
@Cynic, The only thing that scares me about that coat is that it looks like something Don Cherry would wear.
Bob has doing the Kings since I first went to game…way, way, way back. I think he missed only one game in all these years. Hope he’ll be OK.
I’ve notice perhaps this year more than all others combined that he has had trouble picking out penalties, players, the clock and plays like never before.
In years past he was amazing, rarely making mistakes and doing both radio-TV simulcasts (before the Nixon days!).
@Nitrohockey,
No worries. No one will want to bother cloning Brian Hayward. :-D
I can’t believe JDM and I didn’t get the call before Rich. I am sure they just couldn’t find our number. Hell, I wasn’t available anyway and neither was JDM. So there. You see Rich, you were the 3rd choice. :)
@Gayle,
Hey, my bad, it was in ‘02 that he was out….
Get well Bob! Hope it’s nothing serious. Good luck tonight rich! Go kings.
@wavesinair,
Or Patrick O’ Neal, lol…
@wavesinair, the great roy storey!!!!! remember..SHOT ON GOALLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!! before most of your times!!!!
@variable, I think he should impersonate wolfman jack all night.
“alright kings fans, it’s magic time! this is the ham-man coming to you LIVE on 1150 AM. 50,000 watts of hockey power! Aaaaooooooooo!”
Get well BoB!
I’d actually take Patrick over Bill any day of the week!
My best wishes for a speedy recovery Mr. Miller…
I don’t think I even remember the last time he was out? I seem to recall Bill Mcdonald filling in? I could be wrong but all I remember was how awful it was….
Mr. Miller, you are one true IRON MAN!
@neil, I had just turned 1, so I BARELY remember him, lol.
@wavesinair,
lol…
if we do that, we would have to get RICH a guest spot on CHiPs or what’s happening!!!…:)
“…no raj’er, no rerun, no rich…”
Rich you have a good “broadcast quality” voice so if this sideline reporting thing doesn’t work out …..
Get well, Bob! Our prayers are with you…
Good luck, Rich! No pressure… You’re not only representing yourself, your family but US, your extended family…
Like in Buckaroo Banzai, don’t disgrace us! (Not that you have, ever!)
:)
Oh wow. Get better soon Bob. And Rich, break a leg tonight (not yours or Nick’s)!
Bob! Get well soon! You’re one of THE BEST play by play commentators out there!
@BringBackMarcel, Dual threat.
Well Rich everyone knows you have the perfect face for radio. Wink, wink, nudge nudge. Say no more.
I don’t know why LA has been blessed by the greatest announcers of all time (Scully/Miller/Hearn) but I’m happy we have been blessed with their ability to do flawless play by play. Now all that’s left to do is wish Miller a speedy recovery to get back behind that mic where he belongs.
@variable, he should throw in a few happy days references on air too!
“even potsie could have stopped that shot.”
“this team kept it cool down the stretch. it was like watching 5 little fonzies out there.”
“we’re giving away a free arnold’s burger to caller number 11.”
@Dominick,
Nah,
That would be TOO CONSERVATIVE for Cherry.
@wavesinair, Bob lost his voice once and Nick had to do the game in the late 70’s, early 80’s.
Bob, my well wishes and prayers are with you and your family! I hope you have a fast recovery! I am going to miss hearing your voice tonight. – Tim from Salinas, California.
Rich, I know you are going to do a great job tonight! Have fun up there!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Bob…We need you for the Playoff Push!!! Good luck Rich. Just like when a player is injured, someone has to step in and help the team…..
Bob will be missed.
Rich — Quick is the one with the big stick.
Just joking with you, your analysis on the blog has really improved this year. Throw in an interesting player tidbit during the broadcast. You’re going to do great.
We won’t have Bob forever. This is a good time to appreciate what we have. Here’s to a speedy recovery!
Rich, break a leg! I’m sure you’ll do fine. Just imagine you’re on the phone with a beer buddy (minus the frigging FCC issue) for the whole game, and I know you’ll knock it through the back of the net.
Best wishes, Bob the Legend! You are the best and a truly fantastic human being as well. Get better soon!
Get well soon, Bob. You will be missed tonight.
@Gayle,
@ wavesinar, yep. Billy Mac can stay with the Lakers….
Take your time Bob!
We all wish you only the best.
Get well soon Bob! Im sure Jim will do fine and Rich will have fun subbing in tonight. But its the best play-by-play announcer in Hockey we’ll all be thinking about :)
Do you get paid extra for this? And no excuses, I still want my in-game updates!
get good bob!
GET WELL BOB!!!!!
Get well soon Bob!
We’re all hoping for a speedy recovery, big guy!
Nashville bbq beans will do it every time.
I will echo that we hope Bob feels better soon.
Foxy doing play by play? Was it not earlier in the year he had to take over for a few minutes and was the “Deer in the Headlights”.
Best wishes to a classy pro who will always be the ultimate LA King. Get better soon, Bob!
Bob, get well soon.
Rich, congratulations and good luck.
Get better soon Bob. (Looks at Bob’s signed book on shelf with a smile).
get well soon bob it will be strange without your voice tonight get well for mondays game
@wavesinair, Bill McDonnald??? MAJOR NO THANX!
I forget the guy’s name, but there was a fill-in replacement for Bob in one of the 18 he’s missed that is not listed on the website story (it was just one game,) but when he ran down the out of town scoreboard, he said that such and such team SHUT OUT the Minnesota North Stars 2 to 1.
Kinda like when Padres announcer Jerry Coleman once said, “and he slides into second with a stand-up double.”
:-)
Here’s to a speedy recovery Bob. Foxy and Daryl will do just fine, but we all know Bob is the best.
Have fun in the booth Rich.
Go Kings!
Get well soon bob, and good luck Rich!
@Marc Nathan,
Years ago, Jerry Doggett shared play-by-play duties with Vin Scully for the Dodgers. The Dodgers were in the field when a player hit a fly ball to left field. Doggett announced “a fly ball to short left field, (Bill) Russell going out, (Bill) Buckner coming in, and Bill makes the catch.”
Please send Bob all of our thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery and return. You’ll be missed, but we need you in A+ shape to call the playoffs!!
Hope Bob gets better soon. Good luck, Rich!
You could hear he was struggling in the Nashville game. It sounded like he had a sore throat or something. I could tell he was soldiering through but it wasn’t easy. Maybe that’s the one good thing about the game not going to overtime. Well, thanks Bob and get well soon!
GET WELL SOON MR. MILLER…………….
Maybe too much guest singing in the honky-tonks… Fell better Bob, you are the best since Lloyd Petit. Good luck Rich! Just remember, any time the Kings get penalty called it was wrong, makes things simpler.
Get well soon, Bob!! You will be missed.
Bob, Have a speedy recovery. Have fun Rich!
You will be missed tonight Bob, take care.
GET WELL BOB! WE NEED YOU!!!!!!!
Wishing a speedy recovery to Bob. Rich, nice way of phrasing this “uh, me.” All kidding aside, Rich your professionalism is so good we know you’ll do just fine!
feel better bob!
Get well soon Bob.
Get well soon Bob!
Good luck, Rich!
@HeyChief, Doggett also called on play where I believe it was Sax playing second, and he announces “pop up to Sax, he is underneath it, and it is out of here. Home run.” Our whole row laughed for 30 minutes.
Bob — rest up, come back strong, you have 45 more games to do this spring.
Get well soon Bob! All the best! :)
Get well soon Bob. Good luck tonight Rich !
Get well soon Bob! Have fun tonight, Rich!
I’ll be listening to the radio tonight. Have fun Rich!
The Kings just wouldn’t be the same without Bob Miller.
Hope to hear you back soon Bob!
to say with certainty that this is only his 18th game missed means that someone knows the other 17 games; his 17th was in 2002 when Bill Mac Donald filled in; I know he also missed dec 13,1984 and oct 26 and 28, 1990, on all of which Nick Nickson did a simulcast; that leaves 13 other games Bob missed from 1973 to 2002; which ones? and who replaced him
Bob..
Wishes for a speedy recovery and hoping it
is nothing too serious. You are a GEM to all
us loyal King fans.We all know how lucky we are to have the #1play caller in all of Hockey.You are our “Voice “.
Bob..
Wishes for a speedy recovery and hoping it is nothing too serious. You are a GEM to all us loyal King fans. We all know how lucky we are to have the #1 play caller in all of Hockey.
You are the King’s “Voice “.
I’ve been listening to the radio, but it’s a little ahead of TV so I know what’s going to happen before I see it happen. Pretty annoying.
Bob.
YOU are the Dean of NHL play-by-play announcers. Living in Canada, I’m forced to hear that local announcer here are the best in the league. I have NHL Center Ice not only to see my Kings on television, but to hear YOU and Jim Fox call the game.
Please, get well soon. I’m especially thinking of tonight as Montreal is in town. Because you see, the last home game I got to see was vs. Montreal in the old Fabulous Forum in 1985 and was the last time I got to see you in person.
Please get well soon.
Can’t wait for the chance to see the Kings and YOU in person again at Staples Center.
I’m honestly terrified about the day when Bob will step down, hopefully not anytime soon.
Hope Mr. Miller gets well soon.
Fortunate to have talked with Bob a few times and know a friend of his. An even better man than announcer, and he’s a legendary announcer. Sounds like a just little laryngitis, but everybody’s comments here just prove that he is a King among the Kings.
@j t grace,
Thanks. I’ve been looking since the game last night to find out this info without luck. I’d love to know who else filled in in the past.
I’ve had Center Ice here in Boston since ‘99 but dont remember the ‘02 game but thanks for filling me in on MacDonald. Didnt Bob miss that game due to his daughter’s wedding or something?
So glad Nick Nickson will be doing this week on TV….he has pbp experience on tv from years ago already. I almost wish, with the job Evans did last night they just simulcasted Nickson, Fox, and Evans!
Dear Bob,
Hope you’ll be back in the lineup soon. We need you for the playoffs!
GET WELL SOON BOB. YOU ARE SORELY MISSED.
Hey Bob, get well soon. Marty is antsy to hear your artful commentary again.
