Canada vs. Slovakia

One more semifinal to go. Who will win, Canada’s Drew Doughty or Slovakia’s Michal Handzus? Either way, it’s setting up nicely for the Kings’ players. If the Canada-Slovakia loser beats Finland in tomorrow’s bronze-medal game, all five Kings will win a medal. Feel free to discuss the developments of tonight’s game here!

(And congrats to the Canadian women for the big curling uh, silver today!) (EDIT: Thought I saw a final score. Dewey beat Truman too, right?)

    Congrats to the Canadian women, it was a hard fought…..who am i kidding it was curling…but a gold medal nonetheless, Hooray Canada!

  2. IIShort says:

    Good luck to both Kings members, either way let’s have a good game boys!

  3. deadcatbounce says:

    I said Slovakia before the Olympics started and I’m sticking with them tonight.

  4. Um… I just turned on the curling match and Sweden beat the Canadian women in the 11th end…

    Canada got silver buds. Serve you right for jumping the gun!

  5. Off-topic note/
    Some news of concern:

    Listening to the Manchester Monarchs game tonight, on SiriusXM 204.

    Bill Ranford, Kings goalie coach interviewed during the second intermission, said that Jonathon Quick tweaked his back during Team USA workouts, and has been needing the rest, physical and mental…

    Hope it’s resolved.

  6. Mike says:

    Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Sweden just win the women’s curling gold medal. True Cheryl Bernard is a major hottie, but it was Sweden’s blonds that took the gold.

  7. Christian T (AK) says:

    I thought Sweden just won the Curling Gold. And my hockey prediction is:
    Canada
    US
    Slovakia

    Close game for US and Canada and US may be able to pull it out because Burke built this team to play canada

  8. Arron says:

    Rich,

    The Canadian women lost the gold medal game and got silver instead.

  9. WWAMD says:

    Um Canadian Women didn’t win gold…and Cheryl is HOTTTTT!

  10. @BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy, are we sure about that

  11. luckyluc13 says:

    GO SLOVAKIA….Sorry Drew

  12. Sorry Doughty.

    USA
    Slovakia
    Canada

  13. @brian simmons,

    Listening to Ken Cail, on Manchester Monarchs radio, interview between periods…

  14. @brian simmons, quick will be ready

  15. @brian simmons, quick is tough ana will be ready

  16. Timbo from Canada says:

    @Surly Jacob (JDM),

    Jumping the gun??? I already have us down for the Gold. It’s a no brainer!!!

  17. RJC76 says:

    @Surly Jacob (JDM),

    I didn’t actually watch it lol. I was taking Rich’s word for it…way to crush my dreams Rich.

  18. Heh. I meant Rich posted that Canada won curling gold at 5:41, when the 10th end wasn’t even over yet (assuming it was on tv live).

  19. RJC76 says:

    I didn’t even check…serves me right. Congrats to Norway.

  20. RJC76 says:

    @RJC76,

    Damn i meant Sweden…oh forget it it’s just curling.

  21. wavesinair says:

    No doubt a good goal.

  22. wavesinair says:

    Thanks for the info Bako! Was there no indication how serious it was or if his back is any better?

  23. RJC76 says:

    and another

  24. Simmer says:

    I hope Ryan Getzlaf gets trampled to death by some stampeding mounties. Every time I have to look at his smug, idiotic grin, I wish someone would just knock his teeth out.

    Does that make me a bad person?

  25. wavesinair says:

    Slovakia better start getting nasty or this game will quickly go the way of the fin flop.

  26. KingFan4ever says:

    @Simmer,

    Not really. I can’t stand Getslaugh either….

  27. Timbo from Canada says:

    One period down two to go. I can’t wait till Sunday!! Revenge will be so sweet. What a party it is here everywhere in Canada tonight. Every bar is packed with hockey fans

  28. RJC76 says:

    @KingFan4ever,

    Hopefully it’s after the gold medal game…we regretfully need him right now. But after the Olympics works for me.

  29. wavesinair says:

    IF they get by Slovakia, it will be so great to watch Team USA beat Canada 2 times in a row on Sunday. The meltdown will be phenomenal. There is no doubt in my mind the US team can beat them again.

  30. RJC76 says:

    @Timbo from Canada,

    sure they can…but will they? we shall see.

  31. RJC76 says:

    @RJC76,

    that was meant for waves by the way…i’ll figure out this reply thing one of these days.

  32. MikeL says:

    @Timbo from Canada, Canadian fan’s will want revenge but if Team Canada is only thinking about beating the USA purely for revenge then they will lose they need to think about the gold not USA.. With that said GO USA,

  33. Dan H. says:

    Stocking crying towels for Crosby must be a cottage industry wherever he’s playing. Man that guy never stops whining.

  34. RJC76 says:

    @Dan H.,

    Should send him to Detroit more often…i heard they could use the jobs.

  35. BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy says:

    So the score is 2-0, Canada?
    I’m watching my Bakersfield Strangers try to beat Victoria…

  36. Dan H. says:

    @RJC76,

    Cause in the real world they’re shuttin’ Detroit down?

  37. @wavesinair, i agre with go usa!

  38. Simmer says:

    @BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy,

    3-0 now.

  39. RJC76 says:

    @Dan H.,

    Hey man i just figured someone could make the towels you were saying are needed.

  40. Old Codger says:

    Looks like Canada playing Kings and x-kings. Palfy(sp),Stumpel, Vishnosky, Handzus(my favorite King),Dimitri. Are there more that I have missed?

  41. Christian T (AK) says:

    As great as it would be for the USA to beat Canada I would have to give Canada the edge. We woke them up with the win. It will be a tough game. Maybe one we will talk about for years regardless of who wins.

    Let’s just hope all of our Kings medal.

  42. Old Codger says:

    I predict the Gold and Silver will not leave North America. Hows that for brazen predictions!

  43. Christian T (AK) says:

    @Old Codger,
    Strbak

  44. Old Codger says:

    @Christian T (AK), I thought Zednick, but realized I was thinking of Zitnik.

  45. Dan H. says:

    GOAL!

  46. Dan H. says:

    LUBO!

  47. Simmer says:

    @Christian T (AK),

    Did Strbak ever actually play for us? I know we drafted him, but I never remember him in a game.

  48. Simmer says:

    No over yet!

    Slovensko hura!

  49. Dan H. says:

    3-2 now!

  50. AZ King says:

    uh oh!

  51. Dan H. says:

    ZEUUUUUUUUS!

  52. RJC76 says:

    Zues!! Anyone else but you…how can I be mad.

  53. AZ King says:

    ZEUS!!

  54. Simmer says:

    Getting scared?

  55. RJC76 says:

    @AZ King,

    I’m trying hard to be upset right now…but it’s Zues!

  56. AZ King says:

    I really miss Lubo. I wish his contract wasn’t so dang much, be nice to have him back.

  57. RJC76 says:

    @Simmer,

    Never!

  58. AZ King says:

    @RJC76,

    LOL. Kings fans first my friend!

  59. Simmer says:

    I’m pretty sure Canada will be able to beat Finland for the Bronze. Although, Selanne is pretty solid…

    Slovesnko hura!

  60. Dan H. says:

    Wow no call on two guys wiping out Zednik when he didn’t have the puck.

  61. RJC76 says:

    @Dan H.,

    Dumb play by Morrow on that one, should have been a call. we got lucky.

  62. Simmer says:

    @Dan H.,

    Are you surprised? The Canadians have picked up one penalty in this entire game.

  63. Simmer says:

    @Dan H.,

    It’s that lame, “put the whistles away in the last five minutes” mentality. As if the rules should only apply for 55 minutes.

  64. sasKing says:

    Holy crap, we barely escaped with that one!

  65. Dan H. says:

    OH WOW! Whoever just missed that empty net for Slovakia is going to have a sleepless night and many nightmares. Was it Demitra with 10 seconds left?

  66. RJC76 says:

    Bring on the US!

  67. AZ King says:

    Man I thought Demitra had that at the end. Again how awesome is it to see Drew out there in the last minute with the game on the line. Congrats Canada, Sunday is going to be a war!!

  68. RJC76 says:

    @Dan H.,

    I Think Luongo got his glove on it

  69. Simmer says:

    @Dan H.,

    Former King Pavol Demitra…

  70. AZ King says:

    Wow Doughty got a stick on Demitra’s shot and deflected wide.

  71. Dan H. says:

    Hopefully Handzus gets a bronze tomorrow. He deserves it.

    What an ending to the game. Can’t ask for a better third period.

  72. DougS says:

    Ohhhhh, Pavol, Pavol, Pavol…. So disappointing.

    Not because I really wanted Canada to lose, but just because it gave me the warm fuzzies all tournament to see Ziggy and Stumpy back in the saddle again. And Lubo and Zeus for good measure. Would have been so sweet even if they just extended it into OT.

  73. Simmer says:

    Screw you, Canada.

    You may have the most talented team assembled in the last 50 years, but you don’t have half the heart of that Slovakian team.

    At least it takes any emotional dilemma out of the gold medal game. It’s tough to root against the U.S., but it would’ve been impossible to cheer against that Slovakian team. On the other hand, there’s nothing easier that cheering against Getzlaf and whiney, pathetic ilk…

  74. Dan H. says:

    Would anyone mind seeing Palffy on the left wing for a season? I know he’s 37 but man I miss that guy. He still looks like he has some jump.

    Anyone know if he’s still Pittsburgh property IF he was to think about coming back?

  75. KingsFan in OC says:

    @Simmer,

    Couldn’t agree more. However, after the second period was the first time I have ever seen him without a helmet. Dude is almost bald. Ryan – just shave the head! Who are you kidding?

    Seeing that made me happy!

  76. RJC76 says:

    We’re whiney? Screw you Canada? hmm ok

    Good Luck in the Gold Medal game US, it should be a great game.

  77. Simmer says:

    @RJC76,

    Sour grapes. That’s all it is. But I hated your team before the game too, if it’s any consolation.

  78. Simmer says:

    Did Mike Milbury just offer to let Sidney Crosby sleep with his wife?

  79. goldielocks says:

    Without Gaborik in 3rd period … hmmm, lucky win for Canada?

  80. RJC76 says:

    @Simmer,

    Fair enough bro lol

  81. RJC76 says:

    If the Slovaks play the game against Finland the way they played that 3rd period…Zues should get that bronze medal

  82. Simmer says:

    @goldielocks,

    Not really. They were clearly the more talented team. They’re the most talented team in the tournament – maybe one of the most talented ever assembled. But that’s where it ends. Character? Tenacity? Heart? Go fish…

  83. Capt Jam says:

    Someone is backing in to the final…and someone is steamrolling their way in…

    God, I don’t miss Stumpel. Lazy f.

  84. Simmer says:

    @Capt Jam,

    It’s sort of like a Kings history tour, right? I kind of expected Mario Lessard to show up in goal.

  85. Dan H. says:

    I’m all for Team USA but you can’t take anything lightly in this tournament. Sunday is looking like a hell of a game. I hope they don’t dissapoint and make it a blowout one way or the other.

  86. RJC76 says:

    @Simmer,

    Not sure how you can say that. Having to win 3 games to get to the gold medal game after the loss to the States. Dismantling the Russians in the Quarters, beating a determined Slovak team in the semis. All this in front of the home crowd that will settle for nothing other than gold. I’m pretty sure doing all that takes everything you just described.

  87. Crownme87 says:

    Oh man i felt the comeback at the start of the third! So close. oh well. Handzus played a heck of a game!… Lets finish them! GO USA

  88. Darrell says:

    Strange game plan by the Slovaks; it was like they were just trying to keep it close for a late-game push. Almost worked, though! With a healthy Gaborik on the ice the final minutes would’ve been even more interesting.

  89. RJC76 says:

    @Capt Jam,

    Don’t matter who’s doing what to get there, in the end it’ll be decided Sunday.

  90. goldielocks says:

    @Simmer,

    I agree team Canada is loaded with talents but Luongo wasn’t that good either. Don’t you think?

  91. Simmer says:

    @RJC76,

    Nope – I think that’s the point. When you have that much talent, sometimes – maybe most of the time – that’s all it takes. But I’ve seen no evidence of those other qualities. In fact, with guys like Getzlaf and Boyle, I see just the opposite.

    But again – take all of this with a grain of salt. My emotional favorite just got knocked out in a nailbiter. I’ll probably be more coherent tomorrow…

  92. KingsKnight says:

    Wow what a finish. I was rooting for Canada the whole game until the heart and character of the Slovak team slowly turned me until I was shouting at the tv for them to score to tie it up. Great game. In the end though, all I gotta say is GO USA!!!!!!

  93. Kris says:

    Wow Canada almost blew it in the end! But good job! Sunday is what we all (ok some) wanted. USA! USA! USA! USA! Hay, here’s to a good game Sunday! And um as for tomorow, send Finland home with nothing more than a Monty Python/Spamalot song in there heads…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmBlUb2dcsk
    Yes I know it’s a bad quality vid, but hay… they deserve something as all 5 Kings will be getting medals! ;)

  94. Player-X says:

    @Timbo from Canada,
    I must admit when I think of Canadian sentiment the idea of “no-brainer” comes to mind a lot, although not exactly in the same way as you used it.

  95. Christian T (AK) says:

    @Simmer,
    He played part of a season.

  96. Dominick says:

    What gives?
    Christian T and Player-X have comments listed on the left that don’t show up between jet and Surly.I tied clicking on them and nothing happened.

  97. WWAMD says:

    @Surly Jacob (JDM),

    Hmmmmm, u guys hate us that much eh…

    Oh wells, cheers to a good game on Sunday. Should be exciting!

  98. Ecktore says:

    Couldn’t have asked for a better game. Looking forward to some wins by Slovakia, and of course the US.

  99. tantrum4 says:

    USA sucks. You guys can’t even cheer for an LA Kings in Doughty. Go post on HB on Barry’s blog you losers…

  100. tantrum4 says:

    I can’t believe all the anti-Canadian posts on here. Do you really want to beat the BEST so bad that you turn into a bunch ofg 1949’s Americans? (holocaust?) Do you guys forget Doughty is Canadaian.? Whatever. I can’t wait to kick your asses on Sunday. I will be back in FULL FORCE.

  101. Oh hush now.

    Throw some jabs back at us ignorant, arrogant, asshole Americans… dirty Canucks.

    You can only take this stuff so seriously.

    Which is also what makes this all so amusing, how serious Canada is about it. If the US wins, its gangbusters. If they lose, it sucks, but we’ll get over it. If Canada loses, not so much. It would be like Canada’s version of Pearl Harbor.

  102. Oh, and, we know Doughty is Canadian, but last I saw he wasn’t wearing a Kings’ sweater.

    You play/root for the name on the front, not the name on the back.

    Doughty knows that.

  103. KingFan4ever says:

    I expect team Canada to go out with guns blazing. They know full well team USA jumped them the first time and they are too smart to let that happen again. The first minute or two will be intense. I still think the Americans will play ‘looser’. Pressure is still on team Canada. USA all the way !!

  104. Real7 says:

    Canada still doesn’t look like a team….more like a group of stars still trying to fit together….
    they looked tentative, several times running into one another….AWKWARD!!….

    USA DOES look like a team, a team with a purpose….
    love the team speed, esp on the forecheck….we’ll see how Canada handles the pressure….if they can survive the first minutes without coughing it up for an early USA goal, this will be quite a contest….

    Canada will obviously try to exert its physical presence, but I’d give Brown, Johnson [& Johnson] & company one hell-of-a -shot at winning Gold….

  105. KC23 says:

    Even though I’ll be rooting for USA, pretty sure Canada will have this one. Silver ain’t too bad though and in the end the worst USA can do Vs Canada in 2010 is win one lose one.

  106. Rod says:

    The United States will win gold mainly because there are very few weaknesses in their game. The first game against Canada I think Canada had territorial advantage and as a result, has a huge shot advantage. However, the American players have learned from their mistakes from the first game.

    Even though Canada has a bunch of stars, the American’s youth, speed, ability to work together, and goaltending will win the gold. Luongo looked bad when he was actually tested for the first time.

  107. Chris P. Bacon says:

    So funny what a lucky victory can do for a fanbase. Ever since MILLER UPSET CANADA, the Americans have been talking like they’re THE hockey super power.

    I cannot wait till CANADA shows the USA about hockey on Sunday.

    eh!

  108. Christian T (in AK) says:

    I am a little surprised at how some of us hockey fans are acting towards our Canadian Kings fans. We are not playing the Soviet Union. If the USA wins GREAT! If Canada wins GREAT! All I want is a game that shows just how much both teams care about this sport. Let’s not bash either country. This matchup will only help hockey in the long run.
    Now that’s enough of my, “Can’t we all just get along speech.”
    Lets hope this game is epic.

  109. Christian T (in AK) says:

    @goldielocks,

    Canada won a tough game after killing the Russians. There is only one team that worries me in this tournament and it’s Canada. I think Burke put this team together with Canada in mind so we have a shot.

    We did have an easier path to the gold medal game thanks to Ryan Miller but Canada still made it. I hate Getzlaf and Perry but they have talent. Thank god Getz is lazy half the time.

    And lastly…Slovakia, what a team. BEAT FINLAND.

  110. DOUGHTYFAN_08 says:

    LOOKS TO ME LIKE A FEW PUCKS ON LUONGO AND HE’S SHAKEN UP, THE U.S. HAS A GOOD CHANCE AND I HOPE THEY BEAT CANADA!!!!!! USA ALL THE WAY!! GONNA BE A GREAT GAME!

  111. DOUGHTYFAN_08 says:

    @Real7, WHY DO THEY RUN INTO EACHOTHER ALL THE TIME?! HAHA LOSERS!

  112. DOUGHTYFAN_08 says:

    Well said Mr. Bomb.

    Sorry Doughty, I love you, I do. Or, I will. On Monday.

    Until then, there is only victory.

  113. KC23 says:

    @Chris P. Bacon,

    After looking at Canada struggle with Slovakia and the Swiss how can you blame us.

    I also think Canada will win, but I’ll be lmao for 4 years if Canada doesn’t.

    Besides I get a kick out of knowing even if Canada wins Gold, the best they can be is .500 Vs the USA in the 2010 Olympics.

  114. Player-X says:

    @Chris P. Bacon,
    Lucky huh? You guys barely eked out victories against lesser teams like Slovakia and Switzerland, one of whom we have beaten, and we beat you heads up. Arrogance is one thing, but it reaches another level when it is ridiculously when based on nothing.
    USA-best defensive team in tournament. Miller-1.04 gaa, totally sick number.
    I can’t wait to see Canada come out running around thinking they can win the game by hitting everything that moves, especially each other. The three-man monkey roll from the first USA Canada game was hilarious, and last night Hossa made Nash and Morrow rub noses like Eskimo’s when he did a simple stutter step.
    It will be a great game, and for the record I am already thrilled regardless of outcome. But you should seriously consider how you sound and look: just because you finally have a competitive national team (10 golds so far is very impressive) you are not exempt from ridicule when making unfounded statements. And disrespecting opponents, by dismissing obvious accomplishments, reveals your unfamiliarity with success, and how to handle same with class.
    Sports seems, in my opinion, to be Canada’s equivalent to Las Vegas. Many of you guys act like the accountant that takes his first trip there and ends up locked out of the room in his underwear with a lampshade on his head.
    Try and remember the Olympic spirit in all this. Nationalism is fine, but the way you treat others often exposes how you feel about yourself.
    If Canada “shows us about hockey”, is it going to be another classless exhibition of self-indulgence like the women’s team?
    My god man, grow the hell up.

  115. The Jumping Shrimp says:

    @Simmer,

    I’ve always said he’s the best player in the world when he wants to be. He’s a rare combination of big and nasty and out of this world skill.

    I love him when he plays for Canada. Playing for the Ducks….not so much.

  116. The Jumping Shrimp says:

    @Player-X,

    I wouldn’t call Slovakia a lesser team X. They did beat the Russians and Swedes.

  117. tantrum4 says:

    @Player-X, I love how there’s not ONE word in his entire post about us CRUSHING the Russians. You guys have only had to play one good team all tournament (Canada). Yes you beat us but it was a total off night for the team. Looked sloppy and were running around. But we all know we can play a lot better against the USA on Sunday and unfortanetly for USA, that was the best they can play.

  118. neil says:

    @jet, thanks!!!

  119. slappin says:

    @tantrum4, you and shrimp and the other one, keep talking and be sure you are here here sunday night, like i said before, i will be.

  120. Old Codger says:

    Being an American, naturally I will pull for the USA. With that said, whatever the outcome or Kings are winners. DD,JMFJ,Brownie,Quick, and if Slovakia plays as they have, Zues, will ALL win medals of a sort. I wonder how often in the past that many from one team has won medals.

  121. Old Codger says:

    Oops, meant to say OUR Kings

  122. KC23 says:

    @tantrum4,

    Haven’t I heard this before? Oh yeea, it was right before the Gold medal game at the World Juniors Champion I think.

    :D

  123. RJC76 says:

    @Player-X,

    Classless exhibition of self indulgence? This is an event that happens every 4 years and it is the biggest accomplishment for each of these sports sports and their respective athletes. I’m pretty sure their all entitled to celebrate just a little bit regardless of where they come from.

    And as far as arrogance, both Canadian and American fans have been guilty of that on this site.

    Nobody has won anything yet. Both teams have played extremely well, but I’ve said it before. It doesn’t matter how they got there or what happened in the round robin. It’s all going to be decided on Sunday after the 60 minutes (or more)of hockey and the better team on that night will win.

    On that note Congrats to the 4 teams playing for a medal.They all deserve to be there. Hopefully Zues can make it all 5 Kings taking home medals.

  124. AK47 says:

    Canada 5-3 USA

    We have Luongo in this time, believe me, we’re a better team and you guys are going to get masheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeddddd.. We might be enemies right now, but when the Kings hit the ice on tuesday, can we all be friends again? :$ hahaha GO CANADA!

  125. AK47 says:

    @jet,

    How is Robert Czarnik not in the Kings top 20? The kid is putting up solid numbers and his linemate, Tyler Seguin, keeps improving and helping Robbie’s play get better. Not a lot of people seem to talk about him, but he was at Michigan earlier this year, and all of a sudden he transfered to Plymouth of the OHL (I wonder why? hahhaha DL really doesn’t like Michigan eh?)

  126. AK47 says:

    @Player-X,

    Stop writing poems man, no one’s going to read all of that. Basically the Canadians shut down in the 3rd period, didn’t care, Babcock was resting his best players and played Bergeron for most of the 3rd. You guys had a hard time VS the Suisse, just like we did? If I recall, wasn’t it tied 0-0 going into the 3rd? At least we were up 2-0 on them with Brodeur in nets, and believe me, if Luongo was in nets from the beginning, we would’ve merked you guys, but once again, Babcock, the Genius, wanted to rest LUUUUU in time for this game, he wanted to get your hopes up by putting in Brodeur and you guys winning and then once we met in the Finals, we’d just eat you guys.

    BTW, how is Ron Wilson a coach? he’s canadian and is coaching the USA team, the guy is a joke, I think you can put me in his position and I’d still take the US team to the finals. Brian Burke is a loser too, never did anything in his whole career and if you guys dare say “OH HE WON A CUP FOR THE DUCKS”, guess what heroes, he didn’t, Bryan Murray did (another Canadian, if i might add), he put that whole team together and Burke took over, make 1 trade (i think) and won that cup. He has 0 on his resume, and is very overrated.

    Canada will eat and i mean DESTROY USA on Sunday, watch out

    5-3

  127. Player-X says:

    @The Jumping Shrimp, Suddenly Slovakia is now a “world power” in hockey because you were able to barely beat them? I thought results didn’t matter… At least it doesn’t when USA beats Canada. As well, others say round-robin didn’t matter, too, but then again our success in round-robin was why we EARNED the bye, and the privleges that come with being NUMBER ONE SEED. Canada’s supposed status has only been based on reputation and expert projection, but it does not, so far, jive with the game scores.

  128. Player-X says:

    @tantrum4,
    Here’s one word about Canada crushing Russia; Switzerland. Here’s another: Slovakia.

  129. Player-X says:

    @AK47, Poems? What are you talking about?

    “Let us get our hopes up by playing Brodeur?” ROTFLMFAO.

    The Swiss/Suisse/Swish from Shpritzerland;
    Yes, we were tied against the Swiss going into the third. Yes, we overcame that and won the game. Yes, you guys were ahead going into the third, but courageously you overcame that and got taken into OT.

    Frankly, I am stunned that you admit you had a hard time against the Swiss. While it is true, the admission itself is out of character. I thought the genius Babcock was going to be credited with sandbagging there, too.

    You put down our team and next paragraph say that even you could coach them into the final because we have a lousy coach. Talk about arrogance, we have a blog poster that now thinks he is an Olympic quality coach.

  130. AK47 says:

    @Player-X

    you’re telling me Ron Wilson is an olympic quality coach? hahahahahahahahahahhaahhahahaha, Ron Wilson is the perfect example of a horrible head coach, only reason he’s there is because his boyfriend, Burke is the GM of the team, let’s be serious man.

  131. Kings Fan In Idaho says:

    @Surly Jacob (JDM),

    It’s people who think like you that gives USA a bad name.

    Not everyone hates their neighbors to the North.
    Here’s to a great game on Sunday!

    Go USA!!!

  132. edwood2 says:

    @Old Codger, I totally agree. Nothing against a rivalry and supporting your country, but I really dislike when someone from either side of the border is disrespectful. I look forward to a game for the ages tomorrow, which could possibly rank up there with the Miracle and Gretzky coming to the Kings in terms of what it means to US hockey.
    Go USA!

  133. wavesinair says:

    “Yes you beat us but it was a total off night for the team.”

    You guys have to get together and make up your minds. Did you outplay the US when we still beat you? Or did you not play well and that’s why we beat you?

    Or perhaps that’s the strategy when you lose. Make up any and every excuse other than the one that is true.

    Your team is not as good as you think it is (i.e. god like).

    Keep praying, you’re gonna need it!

  134. Simmer says:

    Let’s be honest here.

    Most of us Americans love Canada. We love our neighbors, we love your country, and we love your people.

    We just f’ing HATE your hockey team. Dan Boyle? Scott Niedermayer? Corey Perry? RYAN FRIGGIN’ GETZLAF? Does this bunch of whiners, cheap-shot artists and malcontents really represent Canada? It’s gotta be painful cheering for those guys.

    To be honest, it’s the way I felt about the AMERICAN teams of the past two Olympics. But now we finally have a team we can cheer for.

    Of course, I ALWAYS had a team I could cheer for:

    Slovensko hura!
    (Go Slovakia!)

  135. Doughty4Eva says:

    @Simmer,

    Two words:
    BOBBY
    RYAN

  136. Kings Fan In Idaho says:

    Wow, I can’t believe how much USA and Canada bashing there has been between our bloggers, very immature indeed. Can’t we just root our teams on without all this name calling? Not a very encouraging read this morning, makes me wonder how old the majority of the bloggers are on this site.

    You know who you are. Lighten it up please. Rivalry is great but it can be expressed in better ways.

    Go Team USA! And medals for all the Kings!!!

  137. Belexes says:

    Simmer, you forgot about Dany Heatly – What an A$$

  138. KingsKnight says:

    @Simmer, don’t forget Pronger!

  139. KingsKnight says:

    Unless you’re Finnish, EVERY Kings fan should be rooting for Slovakia today. Let’s make sure all the boys come home with a medal! Go Zeus! Go Slovakia!

    ….

    ..

    .

    Go USA!! ;)

  140. wavesinair says:

    You know what is the greatest thing about this is that on Monday, after the USA takes the Gold, Canada will still have the best team in the world according to every single Canadian.

    It will be so much fun sifting through all the reasons why you lost and how not a single one of those reasons will be because you got beat by the better team.

    The USA has proven, beyond any doubt, that they have been the best team so far in this tournament. Tomorrow will prove it outright.

  141. Simmer says:

    @Kings Fan In Idaho,

    Excellent point, Spuds. Don’t hate Canada – just hate TEAM Canada.

    Of course, if you’re suggesting we shouldn’t hate Team Canada, you’re off your friggin’ rocker. That would be like saying we shouldn’t hate the Sharks or the Ducks. Since they ARE the Sharks and the Ducsk…

  142. wavesinair says:

    Slovakia is such a cool team. My second favorite team in the tourney. I loved watching all those ex-kings take it to the canuckleheads. And Zus…on fire!

  143. RJC76 says:

    @Simmer,

    I’m not a fan of them being on the team either. I would have preferred St. Louis, Lecavelier, Smyth, and pretty much anyone else but those guys you mentioned.

  144. Simmer says:

    @wavesinair,

    He has to be the Kings MVP of the tournament so far. Would’ve been thrilling if they could’ve pulled it off.

  145. tantrum4 says:

    @slappin, I won’t, I’ll be out celebrating!

  146. tantrum4 says:

    @KC23, Actually, I think it was before the womens gold medal game a few days ago! :D

  147. wavesinair says:

    “Name calling” and lightening up aren’t mutually exclusive. One can do so in a light way.

    For example: Alaska’s baby-sitter is going to cry so hard tomorrow that they will ask us to run the country for a week just so they can throw a 7 day tantrum.

    See, “name calling” and funny.

  148. DuckHunter says:

    @AK47,

    Holy smokes guys, let keep this on the hockey level and stop attacking each other personally

    I can’t wait till the game on Sunday, and yes I’ll be rooting my ass off for the US, but I won’t be rooting against the Canadian people or it’s culture. It’s fun and entertaining to root for your team and country, but it’s overboard to attack each other on the personal level.

    Player-X,

    I see nothing classless about the women smoking cigars and drinking champagne in regards to their victory. Seems to be a pretty normal celebration. In what regard is this action shameless(my word).

  149. Simmer says:

    @RJC76,

    Great examples! I could’ve rooted for that team!

    Not that the U.S. team hasn’t had it’s fair share of thugs and losers over the years. And before you even say it, I’ll ruin my own point:

    Bobby Ryan

    Like a dagger in the heart every time he takes the ice…

  150. tantrum4 says:

    @wavesinair, How have they proven that? By beating Canada? They never had to play one other good team in the tourney because Russia was knocked out by us and the Swedes were knowed out by Slovakia, who was then knocked out by us. If you beat Canada on Sunday again for the gold, I’ll give you full props that you are better than us. But there is no way we lose to you guys twice…

  151. wavesinair says:

    Demitra had the equalizer on his stick. Can’t believe that didn’t go in. I bet he had nightmares all night last night. Either that, or he’s relieved he didn’t have to face Vancouver fans after breaking their hearts!

  152. tantrum4 says:

    @Simmer, and yet we will still win gold or silver. Guess they’re not that bad after all are they? You guys have Ryan, Backes, Kesler and Kane. Dirty, whiny cheap shot artists as well. Look in the mirror man, just because the guys I mentioned don’t play for the Ducks or Sharks doesn’t make them model players or citizens..

  153. tantrum4 says:

    @Surly Jacob (JDM), All I know is that when USA was playing Finland I was cheering for them because Brown, Quick and Johnson are on the team. You guys? Cheer AGAINST Doughty because you’re scared to face us in the finals..

  154. wavesinair says:

    LOL, cool. I’ll hold you to that. But what you don’t realize is that after the loss, once you start to read and listen to all the excuses, your Nuck DNA will kick in, and you won’t be able to help perpetuate the national myopia! It’s ok though, I’ll forgive you ;)

    For all the bravado the fans displayed last night (chanting to take on the USA right before they almost choked away the game) there must be at least a little bit of fear playing us tomorrow. The US is playing at it’s best right now. They are coming together at just the right time. I actually think we are going to thrash you guys. It’s going to be a national nightmare.

  155. tantrum4 says:

    Funniest line of the night. The Canadian commentator was talking about Doughty and the “Doughty Spinorama” it has been named up here by Canadians. He said when he asked coach Babcock about it, he called it “the Death Spiral” and didn’t want to see it anymore…LOL.

  156. Capt Jam says:

    beep….
    beep…
    beep….

    Excuse me, boys. Please make room for Team Canada to back in to the gold medal game.

  157. Dominick says:

    @tantrum4,I personally want to cheer for all our Kings.I’m just having some fun with the patriotic banter that’s going on.I don’t speak for everyone,but If Canada loses I wouldn’t be too dissapointed.Canada is going to get their butts kicked though.

  158. Dominick says:

    I meant if USA loses.(which won’t happen)

  159. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    Wow! Haven’t read the comments yet, but I thought we were going to see the confident, dominating Canadian hockey club. They looked like they totally shut it down after they got a comfy lead, then really got on their heels. I was sorta surprised they managed to win–and if it weren’t for a couple missed opportunities at an open net, they just might have had to play in the overtime.

  160. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    @Player-X, that’s what I was thinking. ;-)

  161. Dominick says:

    @tantrum4,It’ll be funny if your woman win gold and the men don’t.Which speaks loads to Canadian hockey fans in general.LOL
    Seriously we really don’t hate you Canadians.We just see your team as inferior.

  162. Dominick says:

    LOL

  163. @WWAMD, hey! you kmow in your heart they do not go usa!usa!usa!

  164. Dominick says:

    @tantrum4,Scared? you guys had to prove you could get there.We already new we were on our way.We were more scared Canada wouldn’t make it.

  165. VanKingsFan says:

    I think you mean if it wasnt for a great save by Luooooooo at the end of the game we would have had overtime.. Gritty hard fought win against the giant killers of the tournament.
    Slovakia knocked off the top 2 ranked teams in the tournament, they were one of the best teams here and I am not surprised the game wasnt an easy one.

  166. VanKingsFan says:

    @wavesinair, LOL. Alaska’s babysitter, I havent heard that one before. I have actually been to a few Alaska towns near the border of BC, and they basically consider themselves Canadian lol. Canadian money, school systems etc etc. Weird…

  167. Dayman says:

    Go planet earth!!!

  168. tantrum4 says:

    @VanKingsFan, Don’t forget if it wasn’t for the garbage goal he let in from behind the net we wouldn’t have been in that situation in the first place…

  169. tantrum4 says:

    @Capt Jam,

    Ha ha. Ya USA didn’t back in at all by playing all the lesser ranked teams in the tourney to get there…LOL.

  170. Dominick says:

    AK47′
    Ron wilson is 5-0-0 this Olympics.Tell me if you see someone who’s doing better as an Olympic coach.

  171. RJC76 says:

    @Dayman,

    Amen brother

  172. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    The Russians collapsed on their own. Canada just pushed them over, is all.

  173. VanKingsFan says:

    @tantrum4, I am still more confident right now with Roberto than I am with Marty. What do you think

  174. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    @Van – Naw….Luongo really didn’t have much to do with the two plays I saw where there was a wide open net. The first time, Demitra passed it instead of taking the shot (!) and the second time he missed the net. Don’t know what you were looking at.

    Normally, I don’t get too much into this nationalistic stuff, but it really looks like Canada needs to be brought down a peg or two, and from what I’ve seen, they’ve lost a peg and a half so far, and they’re just waiting for the final blow.

  175. VanKingsFan says:

    @Capt Jam, Even with the beeping as a warning… it still wont be enough to prevent team USA from being RUN OVER!

  176. Dominick says:

    Canada didn’t make #1 seed.Some of those same teams Canada didn’t fare so well against.

  177. VanKingsFan says:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Well its good to know that even after being knocked down a peg (and a half), we are still in the gold medal game.

    We Will let the game on Sunday do the rest of the talking. The best team will win

  178. Dominick says:

    @VanKingsFan,the term for USA will be”OVER RUN”when talking about our joy in parking on Canadian soil and skidding out with the gold.

  179. BringBackMarcel says:

    How great was it to watch the Kings alumni put the scare of their lives to the frozen north. Palffy, Demitra, Stumpel, Handzus, and Lubo humming along in the third period. Brought back memories. Great to see them all out there together for a little spoiler’s party!

  180. goldielocks says:

    It seems Babcock is having a hard time to put all those talents together. That is why he sticks with the lines from the same NHL teams (Sharks and Ducks line). Crosby’s line isn’t working as he expected and they still have a gap between Fs and Ds whlie US works as very effective 5 man unit. If ice hockey isn’t a team sports then Canada will win easily with all that talent but last time I checked it’s still a team sports.

  181. @Dayman,

    Ditto that, Boys!
    All this flamin’s got me FUMIN’!

    This is KINGS-LAND, folks!
    Had to love the Lubo-Zeus-Demitra finish to the Canada-Slovakia game, Kings/ex-Kings ALL! Only the Glove_From_Up_High saved the Canadians!

    I’ll take that, and just hold my breath until Sunday’s game…

  182. Tuan Jim says:

    @Kings Fan In Idaho,

    Don’t get antsy. This hostility is the way we hockey jackoffs get revved up for a big game.

    All this viciousness is really the language of love.

  183. Sparman says:

    Does anyone know who designated as the home team tomorrow, USA or Canada?

    I’m curious from the perspective of the second line change advantage.

    How is the Home vs Away figured for this tourney anyway?

    Record, points?

  184. Tuan Jim says:

    @KingsKnight,

    Yes!!!

  185. Simmer says:

    @Sparman,

    The U.S. should be the home team, based on seeding. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that’s how they’ve been determining each round.

  186. tantrum4 says:

    @Simmer,

    Yep, USA is the home team as per Bob McKenzie

  187. Simmer says:

    @goldielocks,

    Yeah, some of those international refs didn’t get the memo that Crosby is God’s gift to hockey. The whimpering hasn’t gotten him as far as it usually does. But if things don’t work out for him tomorrow, I’m sure Mike Milbury will draw him a nice bath and give him a rubdown.

  188. tantrum4 says:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,

    Luongo got a piece of his glove on the second shot. Go read the post game interviews from Demitra and Luongo. They both say it hit Luongo’s glove. I’m not really confident with either of our goalies right now. Niether of them have looked spectacular in any game. Maybe it’s time to give Fleury a try? Just kidding. It doesn’t matter to me who’s in net because if the guys up front don’t score we won’t win anyway. But if they do like they did against Russia, our goalie’s won’t need to win the game for us and can play average and we’ll get the win.

  189. @Kings Fan In Idaho,

    Yeah…. USA has a bad name for being jokesters…

    That’s the ticket.

  190. @tantrum4,

    I’m not allowed to want Zus to get a better medal than Doughty?

    Had it been Canada v. Finland, I probably would have reluctantly rooted for Canada, since I don’t care at all about Finland, and I really don’t like Selanne… or was it Salami?

    I’m curious though, which is it, am I a bad American or citizen for rooting too strongly for the USA, or am I a bad Kings’ fan for not rooting for Doughty over all?

    I’m having a hard time figuring out what point your making. It seems like you just don’t like that Canada has a very realistic chance of losing the gold medal to THE ONLY UNBEATEN TEAM IN THE TOURNAMENT.

  191. @Tuan Jim, Good to know someone gets it and can put the game above their personal emotions.

    All this talk of ‘disrespect’.

    Its only disrespectful if it hurts your feelings. Otherwise, who cares?

    None of you could possibly hurt my feelings in all of this, because its just about a hockey game. Yes, a big hockey, between rival neighbor countries. It’s not like its Israel v. Germany.

    Rooting and cheering and jabbing at eachother is fun, like hockey is fun. Insulting and vulgarity and viciousness is fun, like hockey is vulgar and vicious itself.

    It has always baffled me, in a general sense as this goes beyond just the Olympics, how people can sit and enjoy, often with their young children, a game where it is perfectly acceptable to throw off your gloves and punch another guy in the head until he is bleeding, but a bit of cursing? some foul language or intense cheering? Heavens no, now THAT is wrong.

    I liken it to the ratings system utilized here in America, where nudity and sex is basically seen as MORE vulgar than someone having their legs chopped off by a deranged psychopath or whatever violent image you want to conjure.

    I guess Canadians are the same way. Sexual repression leads down dark roads of insecurity that spawn malcontent towards anything ever so slightly negatively interpersonal.

    So sure, the blood and the tears and the violent and Dan Boyle slew footing Semin which could have given him a concussion, that’s all gravy. Posting some comments in the midst of a battle about silly beer, goofy sounding french, ridiculous looking mounties and that awful wretch Celine Dion, now that’s really offensive.

    Sound logic, no?

    No.

  192. neil says:

    @Sparman, usa is the home team…

  193. wavesinair says:

    That’s pretty cool. The game will be played in Canada with Canadian fans in most of the seats.

    Yet, that ice surface tomorrow is American “soil” so to speak. At home in Canada. Nice.

  194. wavesinair says:

    That’s just our way of making sure you guys don’t feel surrounded…even though you are! ;)

  195. @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,

    A highly ignored fact.

    The US had a 6-0 lead for 50 minutes, and played just as hard in the last 10 as they did in the first 10.

    Canada sat back on a 3-0 lead.

    I don’t need to make any other point. That FACT speaks volumes about the character make-up and attitude of the two teams.

  196. @tantrum4,

    Hot goaltending wins tournaments.

    If Luongo is anything less than brilliant, you lose.

    Same goes for Miller.

  197. wavesinair says:

    Digressing into sexual repression. Fricking classic. Sounds like something I would say.

    Now try to apply that logic to the Japanese. However, that would take no less than 10,000 words to adequately describe the dysfunction of their fans.

  198. wavesinair says:

    Well to be fair Bako, the title of this post is Canada vs. Slovakia, not Doughty vs. Handzus or Kings talk only.

    Point being, during these Olympics, this blog is essentially encouraging fans to come and root for their team. Which just so happens to be country vs. country. It’s ok though, it only happens once every four years!

    Soon, we can all start singing Kumbaya again ;)

    Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya
    Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya
    Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya
    Oh Lord, kumbaya

  199. Eberlin says:

    Bobby Luongo seems to have trouble with the puck thrown at his feet/around the crease area. Anyone else notice that? Coupled with what looked like poor low-slot coverage by CAN, that could be something to exploit.

  200. Darrell says:

    @BringBackMarcel, …And yet, they still lost. Oh, the memories!

  201. @wavesinair,

    Can you blame the canucks?

    They find this woman really attractive: http://punkoryan.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/rj_curling_061209_30.jpg

    Case, rested.

  202. DuckHunter says:

    @Surly Jacob (JDM),

    Well said, JDM.

    BTW, any woman who can handle a stick like that is o.k. with me.

  203. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    I’m looking forward to two more excellent hockey games, but I’ll be glad when all the BS nationalism has passed.

  204. @wavesinair,

    You Funny!
    Will always hate the FLAMING!

    …Give peace a chance!

  205. tantrum4 says:

    @Surly Jacob (JDM),

    I just think it’s funny that you guys are always mad when you see Canadian fans cheering against the USA and you have no idea why we do it. It shouldn’t be too hard to figure it out when you read your previous comments and most of the others by Americans on this and every other message board on the internet.

  206. tantrum4 says:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,

    Ha ha…of course they did. But Canada didn’t collapse at ALL when they played USA did they. You guys were just a better team right? LOL.

  207. tantrum4 says:

    @Dominick,

    Kinda like we did on your soil in ‘02??

  208. @tantrum4,

    False logic alert.

    USA v Canada: Miller was hot. Brodeur was not, however, despite letting in 2 softies, he held strong the rest of the game. He was not sharp, but he did not completely lie down in a puddle of filth. Canadians played an intense game, kept up the pressure. Canada did not collapse or fold, there were taken by surprised and Rafalski shock and awed them into taking stupid chances and wasting too many shots from the boards.

    Russia v Canada: Nabakov COMPELTELY crapped the bed. Russian defense was non-existent. Canada played its best game of the tournament, as Russia was the opponent they had been looking forward to for the last several years, so they came to play. Canada was tight, Russia was disorganized.

    Two totally different games, with nothing really comparable about them.

    However, if you want to compare Canada in the US/CAN game to Russia in the RUS/CAN game, be my guest. That comparison would mean the Canadians are spineless and don’t have cohesion or goaltending for big games.

    I actually give Team Canada more credit than that.

    Your logic is, well, logic is the wrong word.

  209. Goring 19 says:

    All I want is revenge for 2002. The Canadians punked us in our house, now it would be great to punk em in their house. I know Canada feels the hockey gold medal is their birthright, but hey, I would love a little humble pie for them.

    The Canadians are going to be facing a fast, skilled, gritty team that really seems to have come together when the bell rings. Can’t wait for the game!

    By the way, can anyone tell me how I can tune out Mike Milbury? (buffoon)

  210. Goring 19 says:

    By the way guys, the NHL game of the week on NBC seems to be Flyers, Penguins, Rangers, Capitals, Flyers, Penguins, Penguins, Penguins, Flyers, Flyers, etc….an occasional Red Wings-Chicago game, will they ever show a team west of Detroit? Just wonderin

  211. Dominick says:

    Exactly like 02′.Too bad it’s taken the US so long to exact revenge.

  212. Cristobal says:

    @The Jumping Shrimp,
    Highlights after the second show Getzlaugh checking a Slovak with elbow to the head and skate blades above the dasherboards. Great officiating! Neidermier intentionally knocking the net off it’s moorings and the faceoff outside the zone! No penalty! Zednik crushed by two canadians without the puck and no penalty! Shea Weber cross checking all night and no penalties!

    Who’s the lucky team in this tournament?

  213. KC23 says:

    Slovakia lost a key player and the Finns got ultra embarrassed. I pick the Finns to win, but I’ll be rooting for Ziggy, Stumpy and Zeus!

  214. AK47 says:

    Canada wins their 13th gold in curling annnnd are going to get their 14th tomorrow in mens hockey, enough said, canada wins 5-3

  215. Cristobal says:

    @tantrum4,
    Hate the States much?
    We root for Doughty, but against guys like you!

  216. jet says:

    @AK47, CZ took some time to adjust, but he is doing fine now. Any pick at Michigan is a deperciating asset. There is little hope for a 4 year college player in today’s NHL due to the salary structures.

  217. Player-X says:

    @BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy,
    Okay, so you prefer peace, but are you willing to fight for it? Ummm, wait a sec… Nevermind.

  218. Player-X says:

    @Eberlin,
    Your post is strategically oriented and analytically brilliant. Be Careful, that kinda stuff sticks out around here.

  219. Player-X says:

    @AK47,
    You spoiled it now. I was gonna watch the game live but now I already know what is going to happen. Is there any chance you might be guessing or should I just skip the thing?
